Down?

Postby Zebreu » Tue Oct 21, 2008 1:58 am

I wanted to play tonight (in Canada) but Dedwinia wasn't online. Are there downtimes? And would it be too much to handle to open a second Dedwinia when one is busy? It's almost the only way to connect to a multiplayer game with my restrictive campus network connection.
Well, I'm just asking.

Opps, yeah. I shut the servers down last night to do some experiments with the current beta (only one game can be advertised per authentication key, and I'm too lazy to manage my two keys), and I forgot to turn them on after I was done.

As for running more servers, there are already several running; as soon as a game is started and thus no longer needs to be on the list, an new server may spawn.

Will the final version need a 2nd copy just to host a dedicated server ?

Dedwinia needs its own auth key to work. This does not necessarily mean that you need a second copy, it just means that you can't run Dedwinia with one key while using that same key to simultaneously play the game with the regular Multiwinia client. This includes playing on your own instance of Dedwinia.

Unless Introversion implement the LAN changes or Dedwinia works with a demo key.

I'm not sure how LAN changes would help here seeing as Dedwinia is intended for Internet play and the Demo limitations wouldn't allow Dedwinia to do everything a full version client can when acting as a server. I'll be the first to admit though that I am not entirely sure how Dedwinia works exactly so in the end the only one whose word you can completely trust on this matter is bert. ;)

if you guys ever get this fully running put a link up for a code download. I'll run one any day using this. I have a full windows dedi server myself.

It should be perfectly fine to use the same authkey to host a Dedwinia server and to play the game, as long as you don't host. The way I see it, an authentication key entitles you to a) play the game and b) host games and c) both at the same time, and I see nothing wrong with doing a) and b) with different software :)

(That's my interpretation. The keys are from IV and are verified by communicating with the metaserver; they absolutely have a right and the technical means (if server and game run on different public IPs) to disagree. But it worked that way for Defcon.)

Hmm, that's something I didn't know indeed. :)

So no multiple hostings on the same key going on? Btw, any technical details available, i.e. mostly what OS we're talking about?

Depends. There are multiple server instances running at the same time (worst case, up to five, but in practice never more than two active games and one in the lobby), but only one of them is visible. As soon as a game is started, servers may vanish from the list.

Linux built with GCC 3.4 and above, OS X Tiger and up, Windows 2000 and up.

Never knew that, always thought there only be one dediwinian server up at a time :o
Since when I see a dediwinian thats grayed out, theres never another one ready :/
Or has it being grayed out have nothing to do with its playing a game, just full/starting?

If it's greyed out, a game has already started. That doesn't always start a new server right away, as this would overload my poor server on high demand.
