auth server unreachable
Posted: Thu Apr 23, 2009 12:36 am
When I open Multiwinia the "authentication status" reads "Unknown". When I attempt to select "multiplayer game - join game" the server list displays a throbbing "Requesting server list . . ." message perpetually. A packet dump reveals attempted UDP connections to 22.214.171.124:5009 failing with a Destination Port Unreachable error. I have not changed my auth key sinceI got it in September. The server list which runs off of multiwinia-ladder.net shows servers running, but I've only spotted Demo compatible maps in play.
I need my fix

Well for the first day I had it it worked fine, and then after that
"authentication status" reads "Unknown". When I attempt to select "multiplayer game - join game" the server list displays a throbbing "Requesting server list . . ." message perpetually.
What can I do?

Check your firewall settings. And by that I mean "Uninstall anything with the name Norton on it".

Well I can't uninstall Norton, and it is listed as an exception in my firewall. Defcon works fine.

There are really only two ways to uninstall Norton one you have activated it. Either use another operating system to wipe it from the hard disk or reinstall windows. This is (a small) part of the reason why so many people hate Norton

Safe Mode allows for wiping Norton as well. Alternatively use an app such as Autoruns to stop Norton from running when you log on, reboot, and then wipe it. However seeing as Defcon does work and the metaservers for Defcon and Multiwinia run on the same machine, it's safe to assume Norton is not the problem.
You'll want to try switching the Port Forwarding option in MW's Network Settings and see what it does. Also note that Multiwinia uses different ports than Defcon so if you have a router you'll need to set the additional forwarding rules.
