Introversion

Requires a bit backstory: Ever since I bought an ATI Radeon 4800 series graphics-card I experience a weird crash, in various games, though until now it happened only once in a while, while in Multiwinia it happens in under 2 minutes after I start a match, if I'm lucky 4 minutes.

Other games have been playable with this issue but this one is unfortunately not, to my very distress because what I've seen so far is really awesome. It got to my attention that ATI cards generally have issues with games (meaning I'll never buy an ATI card again). Well, my drivers are up to date and Darwinia works fine, I haven't experienced this crash once there, though I have to turn off dual-core or I'll get a fixated camera.

There must be something I can do besides waiting for patches/drivers or shelling out another 300 euros for a new graphics-card from Nvidia. I need to play Multiwinia, I wantssss it

Some more info: ATI Radeon 4870, dual-core AMD, steam-version, Windows XP

I have a 4870 too, but I don't problems with Multiwinia. (It's on Vista though)

Do you have the latest drivers and stuff? (I seem to recall that some of the earlier ones caused crashes on some of the maps during the beta)

I have a 4850, and no crash. (not the same, but close, right? They use the same drivers)
To make sure: you have the 8.12 driver, right? And it still crashes? My guess is it's not the card, but something else about your computer (even if you get VPU recovery, it still can happen from other stuff I think)

I'd recommend first you try downloading older drivers. Assuming you have XP Home/Proffesional: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/r ... us-xp.html

Anyway, I hope you get it working, as Multiwinia is craving for more players.

It is quite possible that the video card has nothing to do with it. You have diagnosed the problem, but we have know way of knowing that your diagnosis is correct. Could you please post your debug log.
