[1.2.1] abysmal performance

Postby Shwart!! » Thu Nov 06, 2008 5:07 am

Two computers, both belonging to a friend of mine, are unable to run Multiwinia. The menu runs at a pretty consistent 0.9 FPS, regardless of the settings I set. This effectively means Multiwinia is unusable.

Their video cards are both ATI 9600/X1050 (whatever that means); they run most anything decently.
They each have at least 1 GB ram, and are not running dual-core processors.
The OS is XP pro, and is not the problem.

I have no idea what the problem is.

Also, if attempting to start a game, they crash.
Reference code: 3cf7c802

No blackbox.txt.

Have you tried different catalyst drivers?

ATI fell behind on gaming stability.

NVidia has led the way for stability with gaming and also support for quite some time, even if they did lag behind in the performance department.

That being said, try different versions of the catalyst driver, more than likely, you can find one that works well with Darwinia.

That says there is no OpenGL acceleration installed. It's probably Vista with drivers from Microsoft. As TomCat39 says, get recent drivers directly from ATI, that should solve the problem.

Not necessarily the latest/most recent. With Catalyst drivers, sometimes older versions are better for the games you happen to be playing. So you have to try a slew and see what works best for you. YMV sort of thing.

It's one reason why I got away from ATI and went back to NVidia. Less hassle.

I've tried 6 different drivers. No change.

Does another process have higher priority? Also, Get rid of your auth key.

How well do they run darwinia?

DEMOIO-RYYIMS-NVFUBS-SDJAWT-CDC

What authkey? ;)

I dunno about Darwinia; that would be good to check.
No, no other processes have priority; as it happens, Multiwinia uses the entirety of the CPU for both systems.

Try rolling back to Catalyst 7.11 or earlier.

I was just reading that Second Life has issues with ATI cards like 9600 Pro from 7.12 up.

7.11 has OpenGL 2.0 support. 7.12 added 2.1 support. I think Catalyst 8.1 may be the beginnings of OpenGL 3.0 support but only on the newest cards.

I also came across a hotfix for catalyst 7.9 which I read was mainly an OpenGL fix of sorts.

hotfix: http://support.ati.com/ics/support/defa ... onID=20856

Previous Catalyst drivers: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vist ... sta32.html

AMD recommended uninstall technique: http://www.amd-firefly.com/firefly2007/ ... client.jsp

Turns out Darwinia has a "Oh good god Darwinia just crashes!" issue on these machines.
I can't find a workaround to test performance ingame, but the world map is so slow as to be unusable.
Can't easily change the Catalyst drivers right now; it's not my computer, and I don't want to mess it up.

just curious what setup you have.

i got a
WinXP Pro
ATI mobility radeon 9000
1g ram
2.8Ghz processor and MW runs pretty happy so far

unless you got some god forsaken anti-virus which i find usually hogs up system resources.

In the first post he said they are not running dual core processors, 1 gig memory and ATI 9600 and ATI X1050 video card on WinXP pro.

One thing I forgot about, AVG 8.0 seems to conflict with Multiwinia, not sure about Darwinia.

Oh, I forgot to ask, what version DirectX are those machines running.

Maybe it needs to be updated to DX9.0c?

I'd love to, but... eh... I can't download DirectX.
Seriously, the internet browser crashes every time I try.

AVG doesn't conflict with Darwinia.

Plus, the system is allocating 96% of its resources to Darwinia/Multiwinia.

Sounds like there is a ton of spyware/malware if the browser won't even operate to download DirectX.

Spyware and malware will cause havoc with any program.

Also there maybe serious problems with the registry. A bloated registry with errors can really bog a system down. Not only in running but in resources, boot up and shut down times.
