Steam.1.2.0 incompatible with "retail"-demo?

I wanted to try the new demo in my home network on a second computer.
I bought multiwinia via steam - version: win32-multiwinia-steam.1.2.0
and downloaded the demo from the introversion website - version: win32-multiwinia-retail.iv.1.2.0

Each side cant join the other side as a server.
In the multiplayer game lobby you see the game as "incompatible: retail.iv.1.2.0 (white highlighted)

When trying to join the following message appears:

BUT its possible that both computers (steam and retail-demo) join a 3rd party-game and play together :(

Any ideas?

EDIT:
I installed steam on the second computer and downloaded the multiwinia demo via steam and everything works great!!!
version of the steam-demo: win32-multiwinia-steam.1.2.0
i also discoverd, that the steam - multiwinia.exe is 3,07MB and the retail-demo - multiwinia.exe is 3,03MB

LAN games are managed independently of the metaserver, and the metaserver knows which versions are compatible with each other. For LAN games, this information is missing, so MW errs on the safe side and claims unknown versions are not compatible. That check is a bit strict, apparently; that is a bug.

That extra bit would be the achievement code.

And Steam's wrapper, that checks if the user logged into Steam has got the full game.

It doesn't have that, though.
All MW seems to care about is the authkey.

Wow. You're right. That's the first Steam game I've seen that doesn't use the wrapper. :D
