Retail download incompatible with retail Steam version

Postby blueshift » Mon Oct 20, 2008 11:30 pm

I bought Multiwinia through the online store, my friend bought it through Steam. We can see each other in the server browser, but are listed as INCOMPATIBLE to each other and can't connect.

My version is reported as retail.iv.1.1.0, his is steambeta.1.9.35

I can see other people that I can connect to, him likewise, but the two are disjoint sets.

We bought this to play each other.. :(
Please advise.. thanks.

The retail version is not compatible with the beta version. Your friend needs to use the retail version if he wants to play against you.

Hi Xander. I am the friend in question :). I did not choose to have the beta version. I'm after the full version patched to 1.1. All I've done is purchase the game through steam, but the version it has downloaded is 1.9.35.0 for some reason (I double-checked the version of the exe). Oddly the install folder also contains a changes.txt file which lists all the patch changes up to version 1.1. It seems Steam is simply supplying me with the wrong version, however I haven't had much luck finding a download for the 1.1 patch and Steam doesn't seem interested in autopatching (perhaps because the my version number is higher?).

It seems that someone at IV or Valve has made a mistake. I will pass this up the chain, assuming that no one else has done so already. And, for future reference, the name is spelt with a lowercase "x", not an uppercase "X".

From the beta forums (and more importantly the horse's mouth):

Thanks - I now have version 1.1. I should hopefully be able to play online with my friend now.

Heh. I guess sending the beta build to Valve is an easy mistake to make.

As long as there are no references to the Koran in the next patch things should be sweet...

You should keep the beta, then sell it on ebay 5 years later for a massive profit.

The beta build doesn't have anything special.

Well, not the one they accidentally released. :P

Yeah, who are you kidding? People may even truly praise that update!
