Steam -> Retail 1.0.6 Compatibility Problem

While trying to play a game with my housemates last night, we came across a problem. Two of us bought Multiwinia from the IV site, and the other bought it from Steam. We've played a few games last week fine, but after installing 1.0.6 on both retail version (and the Steam version says it's running the steam 1.0.6 too) we can't get the guy running Steam to be able to connect to a game hosted on the retail ones, or vice versa.
The server entry shows up red, and clicking to connect gives a message about incompatible versions, and tells us to update.
Wierdly, a bunch of other entries on the server list show as green to all of us (although we didn't try all joining one of these last night). Any ideas how we'd fix this?

this is weird because I had just played online against a user who was playing via steam while me I play via retail so yea...

Ah, this must be a manifestation of
this bug (sorry, beta testers only; the summary is that the game only gets the information about the host over the LAN, sees its a different version, and panics), together with the client not accepting the server info from the metaserver.
You can try this workaround:
Host your game with the steam version. Other steam versions will connect to it just fine.
For the retail version, start it *twice*, keeping both instances running. Go to the server browser with both; one of them should show the game correctly, the other should show it as incompatible. Terminate the one that shows the game as incompatible, the other game instance should work from then on.
(The idea is that only one game instance per PC can detect LAN games directly, and since that makes problems, just use the instance that can't.)

Same thing here, but all games are listed as full and gray.
And there are basically no steam users, so no one to play with D:

Hmm? Games hosted with the Steam version outnumber those hosted with the retail version. Just host yourself, and they will come.
Also, the games are listed as full because they are full, not because of some bug

No, they WERE listed as full, but the squares were usually only half filled or half empty, or whatever marks it, meaning it was a glitch, i'll get a screencap.
Half Filled.

The "empty" slots are CPU players. The grey text shows that the game had already started.
If there aren't any open slots on any servers, just start one yourself. It'll fill up soon enough.

Nay, when I tried to join it said it was full, and this was just after it refreshed.
And I waited for a long time, and no one really joined, only steam players can and I rarely see any. I hate my luck

Because it was full. Full with humans and CPU players.
And steam players are in the majority, it seems. That's why "only" steam players connected to you.
