What happened to the way the Squads and Viral units look?

Postby St!gar » Sun Sep 28, 2008 3:17 pm

I just recieved my first Squad as a powerup, and I noticed that the shimmering, pixellated effect from Darwinia is gone! Now they just look like grey, blocky 3D models, the way they "really" looked when you'd accidentally view them from too close in Darwinia. Same with the Virii. They now simply look like the textureless models they are underneath all the shimmering. Why is that? I loved that effect in Darwinia! It looked more VR/primitive, and made them easier to see, too. Did the devs suddenly find it to be to taxing for most computers, or something? Then at least they could have added it as an on/off toggle-option.

Or is this a some kind of error with my game alone? :?

*EDIT* And by the way, the air -distortion/shockwave-y effect from explotions seems to be gone as well...

All that stuff was probably considered unnecessary visual clutter and was removed (not to mention they made the game even heavier than what it currently is). Frankly, I'm thankful for it as I never quite liked them.

The Pixel Effect has been removed from the menu but can still be enabled manually. Go to your profile folder (Start Menu -> Multiwinia -> Open Multiwinia Profile) and open preferences.txt. Search for the following line:

Code: Select all

RenderPixelShader = 0

If it's not in the file, add it. Make sure the last line of the file is empty (add a newline if you add this line at the end of the file). After that, change the 0 to a 1. That works for me and hopefully it works for you as well. ;)

Hmmm... I can't seem to find the folder anywhere... could it be because I downloaded it from Steam...?

The steam version would be Steam\SteamApps\common\Multiwinia\preferences.txt

Hmmm. Apparently, my preferences.txt already has RenderPixelShader set to =1. Weird, because they still don't show up in the game. :?

I have to admit that I couldn't immediately test whether this worked (you don't easily draw up Engineers or Squads anymore - too lazy to revert to 1.0.5 too :P) but I recall the pixel effect working on my units. It might however very well be removed entirely or just broken, as RZ stated.

Maybe it's fixed in the patch? I have the Steam version, so I'm not going to find out just yet.

Oh, and could anyone please move this thread into "General"? I mistakenly posted it in the wrong subforum. :oops: This has got nothing to do with gameplay, after all...

What a shame, I like the pixel effect.

However Shaders cost. And Multiwinia tends to have WAY more stuff going on that cost is a BIG factor.

In Darwinia, it rarely got even half as crazy so you could afford to spend on shaders and extra hoopla.

I think they wanted to allow Multiwinia to run on more machines than just the top dual or triple sli machines with top notch cards in them etc etc.
