Difficulty Curve

Postby Musashi11 » Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:29 am

To preface this, I'm not that good at RTS games, nor am I all that bad. That said, am I the only one getting my bum handed to me on a platter right out of the gate in single player? I don't expect to ever be good enough to take on the Hard AI, but I don't think I should be getting run over on the Easy setting either. Which I am. Terribly.

Furthermore, I didn't know the shift button did anything until I read it on the forums here. Why not make a playable SP campaign that introduces the player to the full intricacies of the game, while nurturing playing skill to a remotely playable level? I know Introversion can do it. See Uplink and Darwinia for reference.

I understand the game is about the multiplayer-centric, but really, I prefer single player most of the time. Many people online are twits, and tend to ruin otherwise good games. It's sad because I really want to like this game. The game gives me reason after reason to want to enjoy it (like the nukes and subs from Defcon!), but if I'm gonna get taken to school every time I hop on, no matter what difficulty settings I choose, I've no desire to play. I'll probably try again tomorrow, and if I don't do any better, give it a couple months in case this is actually a bug (and gets patched). Otherwise I guess I have to wait for Subversion.

There's a high chance that you've encountered a bug wherein other people can join a SP game.
It's being fixed.

Don't give up!

I'm also a SP person for mostly the same reason, and I typically like fighting against the AI. It took me a while on Easy to 'master' the game against the computer opponents. Now I'm at the point where I can win games on Normal 3/4ths of the time, and I'm happy at this setting.

Second what Kuth says. The first few times I played the easy AI I got my ass handed to me in 5 or 6 minutes. Keep at it and if something doesn't work, try it a few more times, and if it still doesn't work try something else.

Also, play the odd multiplayer game. One of the first MP games I played was against a guy called bert (the turtle?), and after he beat me he gave me a few very handy hints about strategy in capture the statue. At least when a superior human beats you they can share their experience!

Yeah, don't be scared to jump on a multiplayer game - chances are good that they'll either be new too, or they'll have some experience and will share some tips with you.

I really play a lot of SP, but with the time you get better. Now I play online and its even more fun. And people are very friendly so just go for it. :P

ditto - Used to get whipped by the CPU, now I beat it most of the time. It was the same with Defcon, absolutely couldn't figure out how to beat the CPU to begin with, but after ten more games (and reading strategy on here!) the CPU absolutely never wins. Though I think the CPU in Multiwinia is better than in Defcon.

My gameplay has improved by being zoomed out (all playing area in view), keep an eye on where swarms of MWs are, predict where they go and flank them if it is advantageous to do so. In games with Armors, always know where the enemy armors are and where they are going. Also, knowing when to retreat is just as important as knowing when to attack.

The .pdf manual contains all the additional gameplay information that you need (and which isn't included in the tutorials).

I was initially frustrated that there wasn't an options setting to increase the camera speed until I learned about the Shift key!

Having said that, an Option to have 'quick camera move' as the default (with Shift key slowing the camera down) might not be a bad thing.

I got trounced by the Easy AI in my first one or two games (I think that I had some really bad power-ups luck too  ) I then won my first game but didn't really 'understand' how I did it. Since then I've been playing on Normal or Hard mode against the AI and loving it.

I'd suggest playing against the AI at Blitzkrieg - IMO it's by far the easiest game mode to beat the AI at.

HTH!

I also play a lot of SP, and it also took me some time to work my way up to hard, and I rarely win on most game modes.
I'm not good at Defcon, so I can't compare, but the AI seems very good. :)
Also, try reading the stuff on the Strategy and Tactics forum.
