The game hasn't technically been released yet - is it working on the announced date or the one that it actually gets released on?

At this point, I am assuming that the announced release date is going to be the one. If things change in the future, I will see what needs to be done to correct the situation.

Indeed. That would be bad for you. I will be placing a pre-order probably about a week before the announced release date. So, as long as it doesn't change before then, you should be golden.
