That little shape we all came to know and love has left me pondering why it came out to be like that.
a 20-gon figure, equipped with lasers and a grenade, available in an assortment of colors.
How did the multiwinian come to?
why do we love it so much??

The first question is quite easy to answer and well documented.
The answer to the second question is long and overly complex. It makes several references to anomalies within society but ultimately doesn't answer the question.

If you had bothered to search the forums, or read some of the information on the Multiwinia development page (or on the Darwinia page, if I recall correctly), you would have discovered that DGs were originally a placeholder sprite. They were not intended to make it into the final game. But IV and the beta testers loved them so much that they stayed.

If you had bothered to wait in line when souls were given, you wouldn't have posted that post.

so then this leaves the burning question:
What were the actual troops meant to look like? if the multiwinians were just placeholders?

That's a good question.

You should know that IV doesn't work like that. They have never walked into an idea knowing what the outcome will be. The original idea behind Darwinia was to have massive battles using 2d sprites in a 3d engine.

I remember them using doom sprites in the prototype.
But elexis is right, I don't think they were thinking of what shape/sprite to use at the time, just experimenting with the concept.

2d sprites in 3d world. so there was no chance of having a fully modeled character as a darwinian? aww

Given how iconic the DGs are, would you really want a "fully modeled character" in place of the DGs that we have?

now that you mention it, 3d models would look pretty akward all in a group.
maybe introversion could've gotten creative with it. Maybe little spheres shooting at each other?

How would that be better than the 2D sprites that we have now?

Because it would be
3D. Hasn't the gaming industry taught you anything?

then again, my computer probably wouldnt be able to run it. so i guess the characters are fine as they are.
