Well, at the time of me posting this, I can see a game that is open, so no, Multiwinia most certainly is NOT dead, it's just not very well known. If you have firefox, check this out:
http://philosophyfactory.com/morgan/multiwinia_server_list/
Or if you have Opera browser (version 9 or earlier, it doesn't work with 10...yet), then check this out:
http://www.multiwinia-ladder.net/plugins/widget.wgt
Personally, I like the firefox version because it's simpler, but the Opera version has more features. Anyway, hope this helps.

You can always backport it to Defcon

Hardly work at all. Apart from games without logged scores. And Steam keys.

I don't believe that is the problem. Multiwinia was launched with a pretty hefty amount of maps, and it should not be hard to find a couple per game mode that are somewhat balanced (heck, defcon has survived with one map, and it's not particularly balanced for 1v1). The problem, I believe, is that Multiwinia never managed to develop a competitive community.
By the way, I did take the chance to ask IV the status on the Map Editor, and they confirmed it's still on their plans, but noted lack of manpower to work on it at least until D+ is out.

Unless we're talking about a different D+, I can assure you it is not.

I just popped in and had a game the other day, without having to wait. Luck? Got my ass kicked of course, rusty from not playing in ages like so many people. I hope D+ finds a new lease of life for the game in general. While not killing zombies on L4D I've been re-playing Darwinia out of nostalgia.

Usually it takes me 10-20 mins to fill up a 4 person game. Possible causes for the lack of players include: no advertising, no team domination mode, and only two domination maps.

There is an option for co-op (2 vs 2) in DOM on 4-player maps. You must be using the demo; There are more maps than that.

Maybe he means four player domination maps. Which count two, indeed. Whether it's a valid complaint is a different question, of course.

Im not sure what your asking, but if its asking to do what Bert described, it is currently impossible.
Also ever since the steam sale there has been a large increase in the number of games being played.

I bought it on steam too, and I have no trouble with the teams.
Host a game, advanced options, check the co-op box.
Yeah, its only on 4 player maps...and only for koth, and domination.
