why did introversion design the game in such away that allows the camera to roam into the blackness surrounding the islands? Myst, Kronos, and I began to travel around in the darkness and found something....

Was it my camera? I keep flying off into that when there's too much going on in a multiplayer.

I like that you can do that, cause then if you were playing, say Domination, you can zoom way out and get a general view of the relative sizes of each army. And it makes me feel not so limited.
