The thing about the leadboard is that the top players usually got to the top by only playing the game modes they're good at. This is going to change with the tournament.
Also, it can always happen that a player passes out immediately after a game starts or right in the middle, which is obviously going to lower his chances of winning. :)

Re: The point of this tournament?

GreenRock wrote:All im saying is, why are they having a tournament if they know whose going to win? What are they trying to prove? There's already a leaderboard. Im not being pecsimictic, if that is how you spell it, but i would be all for a tournament if they did not have a leaderboard. But we DO have a leaderboard, and we know whos the best, which is the goal of a tournament, right?

That doesn't really mean anything in this type of tournament. By that logic there was no point in having the Olympics since the nº1 one ranked would always win the gold medal.

Also, there might be players out there even better than the top ranked that just aren't so because they don't play ranked servers.

Additionally, players only join if they want to. You'll notice that xander, the nº1 ranked, hasn't even joined.

NeatNit also has a point. Just because they have won the most games doesn't mean they are actually good at the tournament rulings.

Just because you're afraid of the big bad players, that doesn't justify that they should be (unfairly) forbidden, especially since there are prizes that could actually reward them for being good players (as opposed to a pat in the back and bragging rights for being top of the leaderboard)

Also tournaments are fun.

I play in the Defcon tournaments despite being quite average...I couldn't care less if I get crushed...I get a kick out of playing the top players and maybe surprising them now and then...

I was planning on signing up closer to the weekend.

Hurry up then. I decided to drop since I'm not really that interested and may not have the time, so there is now one more spot.

Maps wanted

Postby GreenRock » Sun May 10, 2009 12:43 am

Multiwinia Tourney maps

(the following is just a list of suggestions, not the actual maps to be used for the tourney.)

All of the modes included some maps that were eliminated from consideration due to them being weighted.

* means that this map is highly preffered.

Domination
(in domination, most of the maps are weighted. Shrine of memory and eternal guardians are the least weighted maps, and shrine of memory is probably the better map for the tournament.)
* Shrine of Memory
-least weighted map for Domination
-It seems to be an overall excellent Tournament battlefield.

Bitterfront
-Is less weighted than the other maps (besides the eternal guardians)

Eternal guardians
-Straightforward Tourney map.
-Considerable for the tourney.

Blitzkrieg
(in blitzkreig, the maps apex of infinity and confrotation point are weighted. This leaves eye of the world and bleak mountains out of which Bleak mountains would be the better choice)
* Bleak Mountains
-It tests your strategic prowess, such as maintaining weakly defended positions before reinforcements arrive, capturing crucial locations, and challenges power-up management.
-other maps for blitzkreig are too weighted.

King of The Hill
(in king of the hill, both maps are weighted, but bitter front seems to appear as the less weighted one, making me reccommend this map for the tourney.)
* Bitterfront
-Is not weighted like other KOTH maps.
-Has a very nice environment symbolizing the MWs ruthless and cold stickman slaughters.

Capture the Statue
(Deciding for the map to be used for CTS was difficult. See the reasons as to why below the maps.)
Bloody Shrine
-very well balanced
-focuses on close-quarted strategic combat

Unending peaks
-Concentrates solely on strategy and troop positioning
-Very good map for a Tourney.
-not weighted

* Price of War
-Very well balanced
-focuses on close-quartered strategy and troop position, making this map my top pick.

I agree on the Blitz maps (Jelco and I discussed this a few days ago), but I must beg to differ with regards to Dom. I don't think that Shrine to Memory is a very good tourny map. It is pretty balanced, but games are over too quickly. You can basically tell who is going to win in the first 30-60 seconds (basically, the person that gets to the third island first, and gets to the far spawn point, wins). The nature of radar transport from one island to the next means that there are only two ways to attack the enemy, which makes it more difficult to employ more interesting tactics. Finally, crates can shift the balance of power on that map far more easily than on most of the other two player maps, again owing to the nature of the radar dishes.

Of the other two player dom maps, Barriers to Progress and Hamburger Hill are both terribly unbalanced, and there is a slight unbalance in Eternal
Guardians (it is easier for one of the players to get to the two middle spawns than the other---the difference is very slight, but enough that it can make a difference to equally skilled players). That pretty much leaves Bitter Front, which is, if you ask me, the most interesting of the two player Dom maps, anyway.

Given that I would recommend Bitter Front for Dom, I would further recommend Eternal Guardians for KotH. The imbalance is less noticeable, owing to the fact that there are no middle spawns (though there is still a slight imbalance---I won't deny that), and using Eternal Guardians for KotH would alleviate redundancy between game modes.

As I don't play CtS, I couldn't even begin to make recommendations.

More accurately, whoever still has it after they both reach it wins.

Airstrike and go through the enemy island, or armour straight through to the enemy island, squad through the radar into the enemy island followed by your MWs, gunturret to make doing it back impossible, OR after using one of the others to make the enemy cry...

As I don't play CtS, I couldn't even begin to make recommendations.
Anything but Mountain of One-sidedness. The rest are fine, more or less.

Is there other ways to contact your opponents? Some aren't even checking their Challenges section.

Or maybe have an alert pop up (or displayed) when someone has challenged you.

Round 1 could take a while

I've challenged my opponents on the ladderboard. I used the challenge to send them my email address so we can pick a day. A private message or email feature would be nice, but not a big deal.

Really, tournament players should just check their challenge pages and pending challenges on a regular basis.
