Why does hardly anyone play this anymore?

I strongly disagree with the proposition to shut sertvers down, Maybe you're right that it increases the OMFG again there is nobody online, but since I have portforwarding and I can't join 80% of all games I would like to be able to have a choice, and that feeling doesn't make you play less right? I mean we're all sensible people, except me, that can look behind this first feeling after. After all rationaly put, there should be no relation to the amount of people online and the amount of empyty servers in accordance that more empty servers will mean less people will come online.

They won't remove so many such that there aren't any open Dedicated servers. (To which you should be able to connect.)

Once again, we see Cyan. asking that something be done or not be done because it would be personally offensive to him to do otherwise. Take a step back for a moment, and think about what all of those empty servers do to the player base. A newb demo player might see the server browser for the first time, and the top 10 to 15 on the list (all he sees by default) are empty. If he were to scroll down a bit, he might find a server with someone on it, but he might not bother to do that. He concludes that no one plays the game, doesn't actually buy the game himself, and there continues to be no player base. On the other hand, if there were fewer servers (say, only as many as fit in the box without scrolling), it is far more likely that a newb would see active servers almost any time of day. It is more likely that he will get to play a few games, and that he will eventually buy the game and add to the player base.
I certainly understand the desire to see more servers up, as that means more choice. Personally, I would be a bit sad if the dedicated blitz server were taken down. However, I am concerned with more than my own short term gratification, and am willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.

[quote="NeatNit"]That reminds me - why doesn't the mouse wheel work on the server browser?
Humpf, even having read that earlier, I still tried using my scroll wheel
Anyhow. I agree with less dedicated servers. I've sat and waited for a game thinking *I wonder if someone is waiting on another server*... Since there is no off server lobby it is impossible to know who's waiting and I really think the server count puts people off.
Having 10+ empty servers give people a firm vision no one is playing. Seeing 5 empty servers doesn't push it as so obvious.
I think a server for each game type is all that is needed now. Taking into account players can still make their own games I can't see it being an issue. If the servers are running games 24/7 then its time for more.

- http://www.multiwinia-ladder.net/ -- there is a list of players that have played in the last hour at the top of the page.
- If you look in the server lobby, you can see what games are being played -- those will be the games in grey at the bottom of the list. You can also get an idea of how many people are online by looking at the number of slots that are filled on the active servers.
