The virus. It was free, as you say
Anyway, can anyone tell the old grouch that I am what's so great about XFire (or Steam Community, for that matter)? They set out to unify communications, but they're only for games, so you'll have to have IRC (or wherever your non-gaming contacts are on) open anyway, and I don't really see how overlaying the UI over the game beats alt-tabbing (the overlays take away game input just as much and obscure nearly as much of the game as a regular IM window) and notifications (well, I only know them from Linux, I admit. They're like those bubbles systray applications emit from time to time and are visible even while playing fullscreen games. Very handy.)

Precisely.

I have it as a left over of the days I played a fair bit of CounterStrike or Team Fortress with friends. You'd send someone scouting for a good server with plenty of space and that didn't take it too seriously, then when they found one you'd just need to click a button and Xfire would launch the game and autoconnect to the same server. It saves you trawling through thousands of servers to find the one your mates are on.
You couldn't really do that with MW though.
