Auth key question

Postby patto » Wed Oct 01, 2008 7:00 pm

If I buy the game through Steam can I also use the authkey in the retail version?

Maybe? It worked with Defcon, but there is a chance it won't work with Multiwinia.

May I ask, why?

So I have the freedom to choose if I want to use the retail version or Steam. I'm pro-freedom.
Plus the steam version's cheaper

Well, there's not really any difference between the two clients, and you'll loose achievements, but oh well!

The best thing to do would be to try it.

So... let me get this straight... you want don't want to use Steam, for whatever reason, but you want to pay the Steam price? If you buy the Steam version, you get everything that comes with the Steam version. If you don't like that, spend the money, support independent software, and get the retail version.

That being said, try it out. Auth keys may or may not work from Steam to retail. If they do work, note that your key will probably be revoked once per month, as that is how it worked in Defcon.

My steam key works fine in the regular retail version in 1.0.6. The other way around does not work, however: putting the beta key into the steam version triggers a "wrong platform" error. So I would not rely on the universal usefulness of the steam key, either (especially, I don't suspect I'd be able to use it on Linux.)

I just tested and my key works fine in the retail version :)

Thanks bert, I only use Winblows anyway. I like your work in "duck and cover" too.

I don't understand why can't you just play through Steam.

It takes a few extra seconds to load.

The retail key might not work with the steam version, but works with the Steam demo. True, there is not really much of a point on doing that.

I bought the Steam version because, at the time, I couldn't afford the shipping price. I am willing to bet the authkey trick will work though, and I was actually kind of betting on it, considering how I intend to play Multiwinia on my Ubuntu install.

Huh? You can buy Multiwinia as just a download from the IV store, which obviously doesn't charge for shipping...
