Run multiple instances of the game to play against yourself!

Postby Vinnie_NL » Fri Sep 26, 2008 9:09 pm

I wanted to see for myself that my sp game would show up in the server list too. So I set up a sp game but didn't press the start button. Then I alt-tabbed to windows and started Multiwinia a second time. I went to the serverlist and I found my own sp game! :D I could even join it, which isn't possible if you start a mp server. So I launched the game and played against myself. Switching to the other side easy to do by just alt-tabbing to the other game. I did this with a 4-player game with 4xMultiwinia running simultaneously. Here's a screen when the game ended.

I won the game of course :D

The game lagged a lot though, but I run 4 instances of the same game and the small island on the screen shows at least 1500 multiwinians. Elsewhere on the map there were lots too. But it was still fun, funny was that the red Vinnie_NL got a crate near his spawn point, I wasn't controlling the red at that time but they captured the crate anyway. It turned out to be a randomizer which affected all multiwinians near the red's spawn. This resulted in a fight which red lost so red was eliminated from the game by a simple randomizer activated at a spawn :P

This can be very handy if you want to try and experiment with stuff, if your system can handle it. While I was doing this I noticed one cpu core was maxed to 100% and the other one to only 30%. So if you can assign the second core to the second game instance it runs better I think. But I haven't tested it yet. And if you have a quadcore cpu you can have 4 games have their own core :)

The only problem with playing against yourself is conflict of interest!

How did you decided which of you would win? :D

About running multiple instances

Postby IronWill » Mon Sep 29, 2008 1:14 pm

Just about that : I managed to play a game with three different instances running at the same time. After 20 mins of game the two client (non hosting) instances were lagging and freezing the CPU horribly, however the host instance was running just fine.

Make a bug report, I noticed that when I host everyone always complains about lag except for me.

What does http://speedtest.net/ state your up and down speeds are? It may be an issue with your connection.

Don't play against yourself, play with yourself instead!
