Multiwinia Tournement and Leagues

Postby rybarnes » Thu Aug 28, 2008 6:54 pm

So, I'm super excited for Multiwinia. I'm a huge Darwinia fan (Infact, I have the keychain on my keys.), and I always dreamnt of a multiplayer mode. But, I'm also a big e-sports fan, so I'm curious as to how Multiwinia will fair in the competitive gaming market. Are there any leagues or tournaments planned? If not, who would be interested in playing in a tourny or helping me run one when the game comes out?

Lets talk about this, I think a good launch tournament would be fun.

If Defcon's anything to go by, it'll mostly be organised within the community, and IV might host something, occasionally.

What I've had in mind personally was an on-going KOTH (no, not the game mode) with X teams. Each round, players would be randomly matched up to defend/capture a map. Naturally, being one of my ideas, it's full of problems. Problems like not having enough maps when popularity rises, having too many maps when popularity dies out, players wanting to be on the other team for whatever reason, unbalanced teams because of people leaving, one team having no games through some convoluted series of failures causing it to be someone else's turn for each of the maps...

So, who is up for it? I'm down to for organizing, I'll set up a little site to take in players, and we can create a really simple 1v1 bracket, starting on launch day. I just want to know if there is any interest at all, so I'm not wasting my time.

I'll play.

I have an advantage over new players.
But I expect I'll lose to any other beta testers. :(

I thought that IV now have a dedicated Community Manager to organise these tournaments? :p:

Oh, you pesky beta testers will be annoying. Perhaps a beta testers bracket, and then the rest of us? :D

Well, if defcon is anything to go by, the beta testers' advantage over everyone else will last all of 2 games.

And you may want to wait 'til at least the Monday after the launch until you start a tournament, as the servers will most likely be rammed solid / broken for a couple of days after launch. Plus I'll want a day or two to get some skills!

It's unofficial, not supported by IV, a hobby project I started together with some other testers. But sorry, no more info until after release (or until one of the others decides to unshut his mouth on the subject). ;)

Jelco

Well give me at least enough info to know if running a small tourney around the launch time will be a waste of my time or not!

Though you'd like to know that The GoldFish is already organizing a tournament.

Ah, then my work here is done! I'll see you all in Gold Fishes tourney!

Wait a minute, I just actually read his post...I'm suggesting a completely remote, sewing free, online tourney. (Prizes however, will ofcourse be up for grabs, obviously, I have no idea what, but I'll come up with something...if I do run a tourney!)

This game can't really get to the competitive e-sports because it have big luck factor (The crates) and luck can't go into e-sports.
but i don't think that IV intended this game to be a serious competitive online RTS game, rather a fun 5-10 chaotic battles with crates that change tides of battle.

He didn't say that. He just said Multiwinia has too much of a luck factor for serious competition.

Fix'd ;)

And by the way you have a very broad definition of luck.

jelco the galactaboy wrote:I also remain by my original statement (from IRC) that MW cannot enter leagues for reasons other than this luck factor we're talking of in here.

Fair enough, you just never said which ones they were :P
