Everyone gets down on the source of Uplink, but I have seen far worse. It's not a masterpiece, but the game and world parts are clean and straight-foward. Compared to how complex the world seems as you play, they are really elegant in a way.

I've seen the source for a lot of open-source games, and they are often complete kludges of procedural nonsense.

I agree that OGL and SDL weren't used efficiently and Oh, all that magic number abuse, but when you get into the actual game-development parts (logic, structure, ai), rather than the peripheral stuff, it's actually quite a beautiful thing.
