Times of Plenty

Are you kidding me? I'm talking to you, Games Industry! How many hours do you think I have free per week to play your games?

Dead Space
Fable 2
Mirrors Edge
Left 4 Dead
Gears 2
LBP
Fallout 3
WOW: Lych King

And there are many more massive games that i haven't listed simply because they're not my thing. My point is, I have genuinely never seen a month in gaming that has looked like this before.

And it just about makes up for the rest of the year. Looking at my shelf, I see GTA4 and Spore. Some very nice indie releases - Braid, World of Goo, and um...some Multiplayer addon to something. Which points to another fascinating observation : I buy the vast majority of my games on Xbox360 now. The PC is still the place for indie, but given a choice with a game coming out on both, id go for the 360 version in almost every case. Big tv, couch, big sound, works first time, no installer, runs at 100% performance with all graphics options switched to full, no drm issues - its a clear winner. The PC has other things going for it - the best mod support, better control in some games types, but it's not enough to compensate for the horrible feeling of your new game running like shit on your pc.

Regarding PC's superiority in certain areas...Mod support, Indie games etc. Let's not get too comfortable. Braid was on xbox 360, and World of Goo was on Wii. Darwinia+ is on its way. Little Big Planet has THE BEST mod support I have ever seen, and that's on ps3. We will always develop our games for PC - it's our native platform - but it's prominance as a gaming platform is changing, and i'm not sure what to.

I'll certainly check out Quantum of Solace at the cinema, but Q4 2008 belongs entirely to video games. This is where it's happening at the moment. Now if only we could start launching video games a bit more evenly throughout the year. I'm not really an expert here, but surely, SURELY, many of those big games in that list are going to sell less well than they should expect, on account of the fact that most gamers don't have £300 to spend on games in one month. There's no way I have the time to play all those games, many are going to be forgotten and picked up at a later date when they're on sale. And if those same games came out once a month i'd buy every one of them on launch day.

Fun Fact: None of the games I'm looking forward to are released in this season :P

Sure, I pre-ordered Left 4 dead, and might pick up Tomb Raider: Underworld for Christmas (it being the get stuff for free season) but I have no illusions that those are just for killing time until the ones I really want come out.

I too have a fairly hefty list of games I'm interested in this month... not sure which ones I'll buy (I doubt all of them, as that would come to quite a few hundred dollars), but the month or so after exams finish will be quite fun, I imagine.

Yeah, I am suffering from the same sort of problem myself, far too many games coming out, and I have essays and exams coming. ;-;

It's not fair!

Considering I already have a hefty backlog of games I bought, but haven't finished playing yet, these new shiny releases don't bother me :)

Damn how I know that feeling.

I can't play multiwinia properly yet, let alone try all of those. :(
Maybe in december, or january... *cries*

Also, why do great games only come out for some consoles? *grrr* Little Big Planet *grrr*

Makes me thankful that I'm purely a PC gamer - at least I only have to worry about dividing my time between Fallout 3 and Multiwinia at the moment :P Maybe there's something intrinsically wrong with me, but I'm not so hyped for L4D - zombies have just never excited me that much :(

You have obviously not played Zombie Panic: Source! It's brilliant. Pure brilliance.

Mirrors Edge is the second retail 360 game I'm getting. (Got the Boxx with GTA.) I can't stop playing the demo!
Wii Ware and Live Arcade finally made me turn to consoles as well. I love my PC but it's getting old, and Wii60 just works...
Other gaming events eating up what little time I have left before and around Christmas:
-Mother 3 fan translation. Damn, what an awesome accomplishment! The fantastic game is worth it but I need to find the time to play it.
-Pandora. Unbelievably powerful gaming handheld and pocket computer. I think this will finally do everything I want. (Haven't had that feeling since the Zodiac...) Let's see if it arrives before Christmas.
Still thinking about Fallout 3. It seems awesome but on the other hand I don't have time for it and the style isn't entirely convincing. Also, it'll barely run on my PC.

Makes me glad I'm not bothered about getting games on release.

Fallout 3 and Stalker: Clear Skies I have chalked up to 'wait 6-12 months to see what the modding community do'. FarCry2 I will get in the not-too-distant future (after completing Bioshock and getting spore). Red Alert3 is on my list, but my friend wants it too, so I'm gonna wait until he's got a new rig and we'll do the co-op.

In fact, Left4Dead and Multiwinia are the first games I've bought on release for about 3 years...

You're clearly doing it wrong :p:

I'm primarily a PC gamer, and being at uni leaves me stranded away from my PS3 and little big planet for the majority of the year: yet this is still an absolutely completely overwhelming month for game releases. Just this weekend I bought both Red Alert 3 (which is awesome) and Fallout 3. Far Cry 2 came the week before, Left4Dead is due out in not too many days, GTA4 is finally getting the PC release that I've been waiting for, X3: Terran Assault is something I need to go back and buy. I've barely started on Spore and I still haven't finished Bioshock.
Above it all, I'm still spending more time on Minesweeper than any other game.

On reflection, perhaps I'm doing it wrong.
