I liked UI-programming, although i never completely finished the project i worked on. The details of where, which parts appear on the screen where annoying, so tried to avoid most of that. Since i have put all GUI-Layouts and interactions in XML-Files and derived a couple of components that rendered themself to the screen, i did not have to deal alot with repetition and such. Once that framework was set up, all you had to do was changing some XMLs to create new dialogs, call another method or alter parameters for methodcalls. I found this design quite comfortable and the amount of code needed for the basic framework was not much more then the 9000 lines mentioned above. I really prefer that approach, rather then hardcoding most of that stuff.
And yes, it looked ugly.
