I think that the curvy windows are too cool not to investigate further, even in you have to make them optional.
I'd first try putting the user inside a torus rather than a sphere. That way you don't end up with awkward north and south poles, or windows orientated differently from their neighbours, but you can still wrap both up-down and left-right and have those great 3D effects.
If that all gets a bit much, a cylinder or simply a flat plane that wraps both ways still work.
Also, you should consider putting the axis of the torus or cylinder horizontal - I suspect players might find scrolling longer distances up-down more natural when they get used to it.
Okay, I'm overcomplicating things, but it's a shame to let a good opportunity to do so go!
