Schmoozing, fast cars and general jamminess...
Without wanting to sound too jammy, I often reflect on how lucky I am with this job. I’ve been on some fantastic trips over the past year; Russia, Greece, Montreal, New York, and even the slightly less show-biz landscapes of Brighton and Edinburgh have opened me up to the wonderful world of the games conference. It’s a somewhat bizarre form of traveling circus where you sheepishly bump into the same people again and again. We have come to realise that there are some people who make a living out of attending conferences, being paid to be the public face of whichever company you represent and living off company expense accounts. It’s a hard life, but I guess someone’s got to do it.
Behind the scenes at Introversion we're starting to get ready for what should be another fabulous trip to San Francisco, for this year’s fast approaching Game Developers Conference. Dresses and suits are being prepared, schmoozing strategies discussed, and livers prepared for the onslaught of wining and dining that so often seems to become a part of these events. Actually I’m doubly looking forward to it, because although I’ve been to several game conferences over the past 10 months, I hear that with the demise of E3, GDC is bigger and better than ever. Stories of comic Introversion antics at last year’s GDC further fuel the anticipation. I look forward to seeing whether this year Mark will become yet again closely acquainted with a park bench (he is also banned from expletives), and eagerly await Tom’s choice of fast car (my money’s on the corvette).
When the team won awards at IGF last year, they vowed to themselves that they wouldn’t enter it again. I can see their point. It’s good to go out on a high; we had achieved everything we could have dreamed of and more and it was time to let someone else have the limelight. This year, we’ll be coming at the IGF awards ceremony from a slightly different angle, as presenters of the final grand prize. Tom and Mark will also be delivering a talk ‘After the Party; Introversion Software One Year on from IGF 2006’, and taking part in no less than five other speaking events. It really is testament to the progress Introversion has made in one year. We are now seen as valid contenders, with a worthy contribution to make in an increasingly competitive industry, and I believe we owe a lot to IGF for where it has taken us.
And although we’re not up for IGF awards, it’s great to hear the recent announcement that DEFCON has been nominated in the audio category at this year’s Choice Awards, a ceremony that celebrates the best videogame releases over the past calendar year. This nomination is important to us because we feel that finally Alistair and Michael are getting some of the recognition they deserve for the amazing input they put into our games. Truly without their inspired contribution, an Introversion game simply wouldn’t be what it is. Well done to the audio team!

Sounds like you are enjoying yourself! Russia, Greece... There is now Envy in my eyes. hehe. Couldn't have found a better person to be their Schmoozer!
Convince the Guy that signs my paychecks that they need this SchmoozeHound to be in attendence in SanFran...
With or Without the park Bench it will be entertaining one would wager.

Actually, I check out this board frequently. It's best for the PR guy to know what's going on in all faucets of the projects he works on (uplink, darwinia, defcon). But, I couldn't help but reply to Vic's blog here about Schmoozing. Plus, I really am hoping that she can convince my boss to start flying me around to conventions to be like one of those people in Vic's blog. I'm hoping to assist her greatly in the near future.
