They were still prisoners, for although they had no enemies persay, the mighty Bugs still roamed the plains, wandering and feasting on the pixel shaders and corrupting the textures. They were mild, friendly beasts, but rather oblivious, never noticing the Darwinians they crushed with their bulk.

It was to be another 400 generations before they stopped talking about Johnny, the Darwinian who Thought He Could, and how he tried to escape their valley. He only made it four steps before a Bug destroyed him, carrying him away mashed on one of its six legs. His screams continued for 2 hours.
It was to be a few hundred generations beyond that before Sepulveda sent the Lightbringers to deliver the Darwinians to their promised land- for while the Darwinians were not yet ready for the world beyond, neither was it ready for them.
