Granted, the last version of Linux I used was YellowDog something or another, and a 2.2.x kernel, but, as I recall, "shutdown -h now" halts the system, immediately. -r would cause the system to reboot, and changing "now" to some other value, such as a number, it would take that many seconds before the system shutdown.

And -k apparently kicks all users but root then disables them from logging back in.

From my SuSE 9.0 manual:
-k Don't really shutdown; only send the warning
messages to everybody.
So actually, then prophile disables them from logging back in.

That's in the SuSE 9.2 one also, at least I think it is. I need to get my copy of that out.
