I joined here on October 1st 2002.

16 fucking years ago. Where the hell has the time gone?

Since then, I have gotten married, have a daughter, started my own business, travelled to the US, Amsterdam for IBC, going to conventions in the UK....
And played a lot of games, every single one of Introversions games, so recently I took them all back out,and played them all again. And they actually still hold up pretty damn well.

So, all of the rest of you old timers, if you are even still around, what the hell have you done in the past 16 years?

Sad to say, I've not been that successful in the past... Mainly because I've been sort of a slacker in RL.

But as they say, a fault confessed is half redressed: I finally managed to get started on a second apprenticeship in August after applying and re-applying all over the country for 4 years. Here in germany, not having finished an apprenticeship is a real career killer, you can't do anything but the most menial jobs since no company is going to hire you. I'm 34 years old now, that's why it took me 4 years to finally find one (most companies want apprentices just out of school, where the person can still be shaped like they want them to be).

My new boss is actually a brit, even more reason for me to like the UK much more than my own effing country. If I had the money, I'd move to England

So now I fully intend to throw everything I got into this apprenticeship. After 15 years of doing the most crappy jobs, I fully realize by now that this is the last chance I'm going to get to make something out of my life. And I will not let this chance go to waste, even though I'd have liked an apprenticeship in a different speciality of this profession; I wanted to become IT specialist for application development, but my new company only trains IT specialists for system integration. Doesn't matter, I'm finally in the IT business, I can still specialize in a different field after my apprenticeship is done! :D

I entered and left my teen years, joined a fire juggling crew and did a few gigs across the country, started studying automation until I left because our teachers were completely incompetent, moved in with my girlfriend (been together 10 years next May), started working for a major hosting company in Sweden, abandoned Windows and joined the battle for open source, traveled South America for two months including walking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu and biking down the death road in La Paz. A few years ago a colleague talked me into trying Dungeons and Dragons, so naturally I got completely fucking hooked. I currently play in one campaign and DM two others weekly. My main campaign takes place in a desert where magic is feared and forbidden due to its corruptive powers.

Brewed my own mead for a while, joined a band, quit the band, started collecting fountain pens and started learning how to write in copperplate. Bought a large plot in northern Sweden with a beautiful view we'll hopefully start building on soon. I currently go by "gycklarn" almost everywhere else on the interwebs, including in #uplink where we still get people getting pissed daily because they wasted 4000c.

Guess I should get back to work, now.

Playing Uplink is the first step in a chain that ends up with me married and living in the UK. Pretty weird!

Some people are still around on #uplink but good luck finding anyone not idle. Mostly just people joining, swearing at us in strange languages, and leaving.

I heard Nirvana on the radio today. I then found out that I was listening to an "oldies" station. I cried a little.

16 years (and... three? usernames) ago, crikey... In 2013 I was finishing off my A-levels before moving to Dundee for uni (and dropped out 3 years in... D'oh!)
I then spent the better part of the last 10 years living and working in Dublin, then Finland, before moving back to Scotland in 2015.

These days I work from home doing IT, as well as dabbling with music composition/production, hobby game dev, stuff like that.

The spambots here are the ones who are actually fucking necrobumpers. It is a good thing to see any member posting here, instead of just another bot.

Thanks for such a good article. I fully agree that music can heal. I’m the pianist and music is my way to relax and heal. Every musician needs to buy a good instrument. Personally I buy my piano for my child and here you can see cost of Baby Grand piano It is my sincere recommendation. You can be sure that here you will find what you need. All in all Steinway pianos are the best so you can choose what you want
