Forums upgrade testing

Postby John » Sat Aug 24, 2013 2:18 pm

Hi everyone,

We've been working on upgrading our forums to the new PHPBB 3 software. I've set up a test conversion at http://forums2012.introversion.co.uk/. You can tell from the site name that this has been a long project!

Please could you go over and try it out and report any issues using the report issue link in the bottom right of the screen.

Please try everything, including posting, to check that the forums are working correctly. Please note, however, that the test forums will be deleted when testing finishes, and any posts made their will consequentely also be deleted.

Thanks!

John

To expand on my previous comment, with the addition of some new comments: overall, I like it very much. As I've been saying for years, though, it would be nice to see custom themes for the Defcon, Subversion, and Prison Architect fora. Aside from that, fast and responsive, nothing seems obviously broken, yay!

Somewhere I have the original converter I started to write. It has this wonderful comment block at the top:

Code: Select all

//ok, so the minimum uplink post ID is 250,000 (rounded down, of course)
//we can fit a few forums in there..
/*mysql> select max(post_id) from darwinia_posts;
+--------------+
max(post_id)
+--------------+
        43168
+--------------+

mysql> select max(post_id) from defcon_posts;
+--------------+
max(post_id)
+--------------+
       102654
+--------------+

mysql> select max(post_id) from Multiwinia_posts;
+--------------+
max(post_id)
+--------------+
        26402
+--------------+

mysql> select max(post_id) from IVforum_posts;
+--------------+
max(post_id)
+--------------+
        87832
+--------------+

That's a file last edited in 2010 :D

The most important question: Why would it take so long to upgrade forum software? :/

Save that question for "Why would it take so long to release Prison Architect?"

There's a difference between building a game from scratch and downloading the upgrade from phpbb.com..

Just putting my two cents in, I really like the new forums. Its a bit of a change and will have some getting use too, but I almost got it figured out in 30 min.

But I just have one thing to ask... There is a "Friend or Foe setting" That you can block other players on the forums, but you can still see Privet Messages. If you want to block someone on lets say, Facebook, or Twitter, or any other website its a full block the other person doesn't even exist when you block. It should be like that.

Why would it take so long to upgrade forum software?

It's likely not the upgrade that took that long. Most of the work is in the setting up of the infrastructure and migration of the existing forums and accounts, both of which would need a LOT of planning (there are nearly 100,000 accounts and nearly half a million messages). Add to that the distraction of releasing prison architect in late 2012 and the infrastructure improvements just to keep the existing forums running, and it's easy to see where the time went.

The software update itself probably only took an afternoon.

These fora are a hacked together mess (no offense, NeoThermic! I know you do good work!), and require some... coddling. It is a bit more complicated than simply installing the newest version of phpbb.

This. Though John is the star here, quite a few of us have had input on this process. It's not "just" a phpBB install, mind. There's scripts written that rely on phpBB 2 ways of things getting done (such as badges and the beta test system and the whole entire damn news stuff on the sites!). Then there's the fact that the users and associated tables are one, but the actual forums/topics/posts are separate as per each board. Then there's the awesome amazing hacked way the forums respond to /uplink, /darwinia, /defcon, /multiwinia, /introversion and /prisonarchetect (and a few... others.. *cough*)...

Plus then there's the whole time thing. There's just never enough damn time. As John has noted, work on this commenced in 2012, but I've been working the base idea since 2010.. just no one has had the right kind of time to actually do anything towards it.

It's been a long time coming.. and will be continually worked on and improved :)
