Thanks for the tips guys! I fixed the waterfall flooding issue and drained the DG, but since I could only find three lava springs the arms ended up a bit stubby:
One spring is in the head, and it provides the lava for the head, body, and legs. Each arm also has one, but they don't reach as far on a level plane and so until I can find more springs it'll be a work in progress.
I'm much happier with how it turned out though. I had gone exploring for lava springs and gotten a bit carried away in wandering. While doing so I learned three things: 1) there are a lot of pretty places, 2) they are all prettier than the one I picked, 3) night comes fast. So I was totally lost in the dark of night, got turned around and had no clue where to head towards. I decided to find a mountain and climb it, and once I got to the top in the far distance I spotted the warm glow of my new night light.
I should probably rebuild it on top of a nearby mountain, or build a signal beacon on one encase I get lost again...

I think I found it. Does it feature an iron door with a "NO AUTHORISED PERSONNEL" sign? Or is that someone else's secret project?
There's a chest in the deep mine with some redstone in.

2 maps and 1 minimap uploaded to google docs here.
The updated minimap should be calibrated to -512 and -1024.

May I recommend that a .gif gormat be used for the server maps? it doesnt look like thay have 256 colors in them and it would probably reduce the filesize.
EDIT: Can the actual map also be uploaded?
and DAMNIT i can see a dozen placed that are much better than where I am.

If you want to make a script to generate images automatically, I'd recommend c10t's map to image and imagemagik. As elexis said, gif seems the best choice due to limited number of colours. A regularly timed map would be nice, just so one can keep up to date.
Edit: Also, I'm still a guest. This is me pleading for RabidZombie to be allowed to mine/build.
My project is complete! It's an 8-bit combination lock system.
In the room, you're presented with a chest with some redstone torches inside. There's eight trails of redstone leading into holes in the wall. You can't see what's beyond the wall. There's also a pressure-plate in the floor connected to a ninth redstone trail. The eight trails represent bits: one or zero. There are 256 possible combinations. Your task is to put torches in the proper places to enter the combination, and then hit the pressure plate to see if the combination is correct.
I will give tours of the secret room on request, but please don't knock down any blocks to get past the security on your own.

I've used the c10t map generator to make a couple of maps. I've also uploaded the world folder if you want to make your own.
