Needlemouse...hmm. The faintest hope stirs within my breast.
But...'Episode 1'?
Am I the only person who thinks episodic content is a poor substitute for a full game?
(And by poor, I mean you need to be very rich. More like, "Project let's needle our customers for more and more money based on a distant sense of nostalgia until they are as poor as a church mouse.")

To be fair, the typical length of an episodic game is 3 hours and the length of time it took me to properly beat Sonic & Knuckles as Sonic was 3 hours, deaths and special stages and all that jazz. 20 hours would either mean a lot of levels or painfully, painfully long ones. If 15 acts takes 3 hours, then 20 hours would demand 100 acts. Fuck that. If we're only going to have 25 acts, then I don't want to spend anything close to an hour on each. I'd like my changes of scenery to be a bit more frequent than that in a Sonic game, y'know?
With the episodic thing, what I see in it is that it may be like Sonic and Knuckles, meaning mechanics changes probably won't exist or will be unlocked by getting them all.

The problem with episodic gaming is that so far only Telltale did it well.
Until we know what they're going to make with Sonic 4 I find it hard to have an opinion, but between having Sonic 4 Episode 1-2-3-4-5... and having Sonic 4-5-6-7-8-9... with virtually no differences, I would actually prefer the episodic approach.

The challenge with episodic games is mostly the story, and taking gamestate over from one episode to the next. Neither is much of a problem for old school 2d platformers.
I've never gotten quite into Sonic, though, or Mega Man for that matter. I can recognize them as good games, yes, but they fail to resonate.

Also, in other news Sins of a Sola Empire: Diplomacy was released today.

I bought it last week or so, but decided to wait until the beta ended to try it.
Maybe it's because I hadn't played in a while, but it seems like they upped the pirates difficulty quite a bit. I'm saying this because there were several cases of pirates attacking planets with heavy or even maxed out defenses, including a starbase, and wiping out the whole thing with minimal casualties.
Seriously, late game I was just trying to kill the last AI before the pirates killed me.

The pirates were, in fact, greatly upgraded. It's the part that I'm looking forward to most.
