Escape From TWG: Everybody Dies

Postby Ace Rimmer » Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:26 pm

Story:

Puzzle One: Solved
Puzzle Two: Solved
Puzzle Three

A small group of highly educated researchers have come together and obtained both financing and permission for a limited once in a lifetime dig at a remote location in the Babil province in Iraq. There have been reports of a newly discovered step pyramid in the area and the race is on to be the first to uncover it's secrets. The researchers have brought with them a team of mercenaries for security, some assistants (cataloging treasure, helping set up/maintain camp, etc), and one/some of their benefactors.

Not long after the team arrives and begins inspecting the site, they make a remarkable discovery. From the markings ("[T-W-G]" written in Elamite) on the outside of what appears to be an entrance, it is determined that this is the tomb of King xkcd! Long thought to be a fairy tale with exaggerated stories of a fake kings wealth and power, the researchers find more and more evidence that leads them to believe they have truly stumbled upon the find of a century. Supposing the stories to be true (and equal in legend to El Dorado or The Fountain of Youth), they eagerly begin making their way down into the depths of the structure. Along the way, many treasures are discovered, evidence that this group is the first to venture inside since it was closed and sealed thousands of years ago. The researchers openly and foolishly speculate about the vast treasure that must still be hidden and the fame that will come once they announce it to the world.

After several days, a room is found containing more gold and jewels than the members of the group have ever seen in their entire life combined! It turns out to be the main burial room and even appears to hold the remains of one King xkcd! The excitement draws everyone down to inspect the contents, except for the locals (helping with the dig) who nervously wait outside. Unfortunately, one of the mercenaries takes notice of the sarcophagus and is drawn to lift the lid for a peak at what treasures are inside (as well as a look at the king). As soon as the lid is no longer completely touching the sarcophagus, a meter thick wall on each of the five sides of the room comes smashing down.

With only a few days worth of food and water, and a limited supply of batteries for lights, the group begins to argue about what just happened. Finally, one of the researchers shouts at everybody to shut up and explains that there should be hidden way out, an emergency 'escape route', if only they can find it. Quickly, the group scatters about the room desperately searching for any clues. <insert player here> is the first to find <insert puzzle here>...

Code: Select all

Roles:

Survivors - normal person trying to get out
Greedy Survivor - person trying to get out, but wanting to make sure they are the only ones that get credit for the find and the treasure in it.

Rules:

There are no days or nights, only rounds. Each round consists of a puzzle/riddle/etc that when solved will open up a doorway/pathway to another room closer to the surface and freedom.  Any person at any time may present an answer to the puzzle, but doing so risks death as all puzzles are booby trapped. King xkcd believed that any person foolish enough to disturb his tomb must be crazy stupid or extremely smart. Therefore, a secret way out was created, but only after passing a series of tests could one be determined worthy enough to escape and obtain his treasure. The group must work together to escape before time runs out.  If no person is willing to try the groups answer, a random death will occur every ? until an attempt is made.

There are no lynchings, eatings, murders, etc. however, two or three of the group figure out that the room itself contains the answer to each puzzle. What they don't realize is that each room actually contains a false answer as well and there is no way to tell the difference. In order for the greedy survivors to win, they must outnumber the others when the last door/pathway is opened. Therefore, they can use their information to mislead and or misdirect the others into certain death or simply ignore their greed and try to help with escaping. No private communication will be verified.

The first puzzle will lead to a passage out of the tomb room, but away from the original point of entry.

An example of how this should work...

The group begins searching frantically for some sort of hidden exit and <player> discovers some odd markings directly above King xkcd's sarcophagus. Too far to above to reach by himself, he is lifted up on <player> shoulders. After some examination, it appears to be a puzzle of some sort. It's a net like pattern with empty slots that seem to match the stands of several golden idols attached to the sides of the sarcophagus. <player> removes one of them and discovers they do indeed match. (seems King xkcd thought it fitting that any potential intruders should require his 'help', even from beyond the grave) <another player> begins tapping on the ceiling and convinces the others that there is indeed a room above realizes that this must be some sort of combination to a door hidden in plain sight among the elaborate carvings up above! From the paintings all around the slots, it is clear that a warning is made to those that would not take proper care of the gods and place them incorrectly. Now, the only question is how to arrange the idols in the correct order so the door may be unlocked...

Puzzle: (picked from online as I'm not a puzzle maker, puzzles should be "Google proof" to some extent) The numbers 1 up to and including 8 must be put in the circles of the depicted net. However, numbers in neighboring circles must differ more than 1. So, for example, circles connected to a circle with a 4 may not contain a 3 or a 5.

What should happen...

Players openly discuss the puzzle and it's possible solution. One of two things must occur.

  • 1. The group finds the answer and somebody steps forward to attempt the answer. If correct, the 'door' will open and the group moves closer to freedom. If incorrect, the player is killed by some booby trap and another attempt must be made.
  • 2. The group finds the answer but is perhaps unsure and votes to see who will attempt it, and that player does. If correct, the 'door' will open and the group moves closer to freedom. If incorrect, the player is killed by some booby trap and another attempt must be made.

Answers can be openly discussed, however so that discussion is not confused with attempts at solving, the player making the attempt must post SOLVE in bold and yellow with the answer directly after. The greedy players are given a solution (which may or may not be correct) and can either ignore it, use it to mislead some other player to their death, or use it to help the group escape. This would be done via PM as such.... While the others are focused on the problem at hand, you keep scanning the room and come across a very small painting on the floor that looks strikingly similar to what the rest of the group is trying to decipher. The only difference is that the idols are painted in the slots. You ponder for a moment and realize this must be the solution. Quickly but calmly, you set some artifacts over it to hide it from the group.
