California

Postby ynbniar » Thu May 03, 2007 12:59 pm

Mrs ynbniar and I are set for a trip to California later this year.

4days in San Francisco
4days in Curry Village Yosemite
2days in Death Valley
4days in Las Vegas

We've got an idea of some of the sights to see (e.g. Alcatraz, Nappa, Grand Canyon) but anybody got any suggestions...things off the beaten track perhaps, places to eat?

:)

EDIT 9th May
Some great info folks, cheers.

Have you looked into that situation?

The black stuff is wonderful but I do like the odd bottle of Corona when I'm in the USA...taste better than it does over here which is wierd cause it's imported???

Sounds good.

xander wrote:"The Blue Nile." Excellent food.

Will keep that in mind.

As for the Skywalk, it's not Mrs ynbniar's cup of tea, but we are planning to splash out on a heli trip to the canyon.

Cheers folks.

:)

I went on a similar vacation with my family last year, although the focus was on going to Disneyland.
Death Valley was pretty awesome, especially at nightfall
We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe in vegas, which was pretty sweet, but very loud.

I don't know if Nevada or Arizona have any, at all.

There are several places in Reno that serve Guiness on tap. However, there are several microbreweries in the area that are better. ;)

San Francisco:

There is a Marriott hotel in San Francisco that has a rotating bar/restaurant on top. The view is nice from up there, especially at night. Going up there for a drink is fun.

There is a restaurant called "Just for You" which has a good breakfast.

The Muir Woods outside San Francisco are nice. If you go, there is a small town called Mill Valley that's kind of cute.

If you have a car (sounds like you probably will) driving south from San Francisco along the Highway 1 is nice.

If you are in the SF area, head into Berkeley. There is a little Ethiopian restaurant on Telegraph Ave called "The Blue Nile." Excellent food. It is a bit hard to find, but very much worth it. The food is great, and they serve a honey wine that is quite nice.

William Randolph Hearst built an amazing house near San Simeon which is halfway between San Francisco and LA. It might be a nice stop over.

The skywalk sounds cool -- they even had Neil Armstrong inaugurate the thing -- but it is half a day's drive from anything. If you only have a little bit of time, it probably isn't worth it.

Sorry Chucko.

California is a big place...if we had 4 weeks maybe but with just 2 had to cut and paste.

Next time.

Oh and if we do, what's the one thing in San Diego not to miss? :?:

The zoo's really the only thing I can think of in San Diego. San Diego is a great place to live, but I don't know how interesting it would be for a tourist.

San Diego Sea World is a nice one day outing. Too far from S.F., I agree.
Isn't U.C. San Diego the birthplace of the Pascal program language?
But, I bet Chucko has only availed himself of San Diego's world famous sailor tatoo parlors.
He isn't aware of the corrupt U.S. Congressman recently resigning.
Chucko has a 'limited perspective'. Talk about 'lame', maybe Bush could sell San Diego (with Chucko) back to Mexico? ;-)

Corona is wonderful. Any beer made from North American Pacific watershed water can be excellent.
Lighter flavors benefit greatly. Still, travelers should stay wary of local drinking tap water.
In my California travels, I noticed many cities have high chlorine taste. Test this at the SF airport.
Here in AZ there are cities with an almost salty taste from unfiltered minerals. (dangerous)
If you get a chance, take a drink straight out of the flowing Colorado River. (safe)
Then later tell me if that's Corona's U.S.A. secret.
Oh, my house in the AZ desert has it's own 150 ft. water well, so I'm probably just as lame as Chucko with respect to H2O.

[Thank you Feud. I admit I was a very poor student of political science. Fix'd]

As a Political Science major, this statement is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me (except that actual finger nails on a chalkboard has never bothered me, but the statement's general meaning is accurate).

The person in question is Randell "Duke" Cunningham. He was not a "U.S. Senate representative", nor is anyone for that matter (unless you count the Senate Majority leader as a representative of the Senate since they would represent the majority group). Cunningham was a member of the House of Representatives, so while one could refer to him as a "Representative" the more common term would be "Congressman". He was never a member of the Senate.

You live in Arizona, you should know better (not necessarily about him, but about how the system works).

Been reading some bits and pieces about Half Dome in Yosemite.

Anyone done the hike?

Is the last bit as steep and intimidating as it looks?
