CS:S lets you kill other people online. CSS just makes you want to kill someone when it doesn't work properly in IE.

There are lots of games that let you kill people online, and they have smaller game footprints. CS:S is a tired game, full of people who "hack" and bores me into a sleep state too easily.

Legit Diablo 1 is about the same.
You might find people although they won't be legit probably, or you bring friends from other games who still have it to play with you or you can play on your own.
