New posts not covering all sections

Postby hitm4n » Wed Mar 22, 2006 1:51 pm

All the forums i frequent are pretty well set up, and i usually just hit the "show new posts since last visit" button on each new visit. Normally this lists "all new posts" as it would suggest. However on this forum it does not list new posts in some sections.

e.g. Today, there was 1 new post in the Lounge area. I noticed the green darwinian where all the others were grey (no new posts). I clicked "show all new posts" and it said there were none.

Anything i need to do ? Like register those areas as "favourites" or something ? Should they be enabled in the control panel to be a part of this function ?

Cheers
Hitm4n.

the lounge area is part of a different forum. If you're accessing the forums only through forums.introversion.co.uk/darwinia then you'll probably only get new posts from the Darwinia forum.

There are 4 forum sections: Uplink, Darwinia, Defcon, and the Introversion main forums page. I think you have to visit each of those forums separately in order to properly use the "view posts since last visit" .

Indeed, xyzyxx is correct. You will have to load each section, and hit the new posts button on each of them. Personally, I like it that way, as I don't read the Uplink forums...

I see 3 sections when i come here. Darwinia with 5 areas, Introversion with 2 and Technical Support with 5. I don't see Uplink, Defcon etc...

This is the link in my favourites...

http://forums.introversion.co.uk/darwinia/

...which i use to get here. It just seems weird for a forum to not list new posts in a section thats IN this forum ??

It also seems odd that if you need to visit "other" forums to see the new posts in that forum then why are sections of that "other" forum shown here ? I think IV should have 1 forum with a secion for each game, an "anything goes" area (or lounge as they call it) and then global techsupport at the bottom, with maybe a tech area for each game. Its gotta be easier to manage 1 set of users and 1 forum than 3 (or 4 ?). I vote to get rid of this forum section cross listing rhubarb...

If your bent is Defcon then allow the user to use the defcon forum style, if its darwinia, then they can use this style... etc.

I guess i'll have to live with it and just miss loads of new posts

http://forums.introversion.co.uk/introversion

There is one set of users, and four forums. As far as I am concerned, this is a good thing. I don't keep track of Uplink that well, and don't really want to spend the time wading through Uplink posts every day. The way that things are now, it is quite easy to completely ignore that section.

As I have stated in the past, the Uplink and Darwinia forums are made up of different people. Yes, the user list is the same. Yes, there is a fair amount of overlap. However, how often do you see coolsi or SBM posting in Darwinia? How often do I post in Uplink? It happens, but is rare. The communities are different, if only subtley so. The seperate forums keeps it that way, which, to my way of thinking, is for the better.

LMAO - Both threads are in the Lounge which is a section that fails to list new threads when i click that "show all new threads" button... You see the problem now.

1 user list, seperate forums. Excellent. Then make seperate lounge sections too, then they'll bloody work properly.

p.s. one thread is about avatars and sigs, the other isn't much of a discussion other than to announce new forums and how they are set up. It still doesn't explain why new threads aren't shown for a section which IS shown when i'm in the Darwinia section of the forum thats in sections but with mixed sections in other sections. I wanna be sectioned...

I'm sorry, but this just sounds like you're complaining because you might have to make 2-3 more mouse clicks. Oh no! Your poor hands!

The forums, according to Neo, will be switched to phpBB 3.0 eventually, which apparently will better accomodate the mish-mash state the forums are currently in, and will probably fix your problem. If you'd read the threads I'd linked to, instead of just 'LMAO'ing and complaining some more, then you'd know this.

Once again, reading comprehension FTW!

They are set up properly, you're just seeing a quirk of *how* it was set up.

Ok, I'll make this simple as I can. (This isn't exactly how it is for real, but it explains why it behaves as such)

The Darwinia index is built from the 'darwinia' database. The darwinia database contains the index as you see on http://forums.introversion.co.uk/darwinia/index.php - except, and this is important, the forums in the 'Introversion' section. They are selected from the 'Introversion' database. When you click on http://forums.introversion.co.uk/darwin ... d=newposts - it will only search the forums that exsist in the 'darwinia' database, not the 'introversion' database.

This is either by design or an oversight of the search code when we did this semi-merger. I'll have a look into the code soon and see if its something that can be fixed without problem, else they will stay the way they are for a bit.

As mentioned by trickfred, I plan (with permission of course) to update these forums to phpBB 3.0, where there'll be a full merger of the relevent tables, and thus you'll be able to get all the recet topics when you click the aformentioned link. For now, we will keep this system though.

To put this in my own words: They are already separate. There is just a thing on the Darwinia board page (as well as the Uplink page) that lets you see a couple of boards from the Introversion forums. Those boards aren't technically part of the Darwinia forums.

If you want to search THOSE boards for new posts, you must go here and click the "show posts since last visit" link.

NeoThermic: A question for you... When the forums are upgraded to 3.0, will it still be possible to search for new posts in the Darwinia and Introversion sections without bringing up results in the Introversion section? From my very limited experience with *SQL, it would seem that it should be possible for a user to elect to perform that kind of search, assuming that the backend is built that way, but I don't know anything about the specifics of the phpBB code.

I don't mean to sound like an ass, and "I don't know" and "STFU, n00b" are perfectly acceptable answers.

Thanks much,
xander

Your question does not compute. (ERR_CONFLICTING_REQUIREMENT)

However, if you ment to say that you wish to find new posts in the Darwinia and Introversion sections, while skipping the Defcon and Uplink forums, then yes, I do belive that is more than possible.

Eek... the second Introversion section should have read Defcon or Uplink, as you correctly interpreted. I should proofread more often... Anywho, you figured it out. Thanks.

Correct. I don't have to do it elsewhere and i refuse to do it here. I use the "show all new posts" button and will gladly miss what i miss... ho hum. I was just asking why it works the way it does or if there was any way to become "affiliated" (in a manner of speaking) to that section so that it searched it correctly. Yes yes, i know i can't.
The forums, according to Neo, will be switched to phpBB 3.0 eventually, which apparently will better accomodate the mish-mash state the forums are currently in, and will probably fix your problem. But it was so funny. Pointing me at threads i should have read that are in a section that is never shown to me when i click the "all new posts" button... But hey, its agreed that its not working in an ideal way. Hurrah, a breakthru. Oh, and i did read the threads...

The answer to my initial question has only just been properly answered. Thanks Neo.

An oversight in the code that searches the forum database sections. If cross posting a section it should cross search that section too... Thats my gripe here...

Well, query is now answered, nothing more to see here, move along please. Thankyou and Goodnight.
