Could we get a unified forum policy here, please?

The place to hang out and talk about totally anything general.

Would it be "in theme" if they disabled your private messages in uplink, because, you know, the email function was never really working? Or in Darwinia, since it has none to begin with.
Maybe Uplink forums should have an IRC mod too?
Don't act like a dummy, you aren't one and you know better.

1) The theme of the Darwinia boards includes avatars, and no sigs. The theme of the Uplink boards includes sigs, and no avatars. Theme in a more general sense, not in the sense of the particular style sheet used.

Theme: noun: a unifying idea that is a recurrent element in a literary or artistic work.

While we may argue about the artistic merits of a web forum, avatars are a unifying idea that is a recurrent element of the Darwinia boards. The same thing could be said about sigs in Uplink. And, on another note, Darwinia forumites would scream bloody murder if their sigs were taken away, and many would probably complain if sigs were added (I know I would -- they break up the flow of conversation, and I, personally, don't like them). However, the Uplink crowd would probably scream bloody murder if their sigs were taken away.

2) Why should the web forums for Uplink and Darwinia have identical rule sets? What is wrong with the current system? As has already been stated in this thread, if it's not broke, don't fix it. As you are trying to "fix" something, it is incumbant upon you to first demonstrate that the current system is broken. So far, you have failed in that demonstration.

3) Your failure to understand what I have stated is either my failure to communicate it effectively, or your inability or unwillingness to comprehend what I have written. Either way, I am not "acting like a dummy," and resent the implication that I am.

Nope, the users are not the same. There are many people who only post on the Uplink forums (including me) but not on the Darwinia forums and vice versa.

Just not 24 hours ago you had an all red avatar, perhaps name tag as well and your name appeared in the board user listing color coded as an administrator.

I haven't thown away what I don't really have. I am an admin on this box, but then, if that constitues a SysOp, then so is Icepick. My red avatar is one of the few that cycle through my script, ala this:

Not quite sure about the 'nametag' part. I've only got the rank of Vet on the Uplink forums, and Level 4 user on the Darwinia forums. Here, there's no ranks, so I don't have one :P

Gravitron wrote:I do believe that you've also said that you're the one who operates the box this BBS is operated on/off of?

The box is hosted and operated by IV. The only access I've got is for making sure the forums are running right, and this extends to the ability to modifiy the code as required by IV. Nothing more.

Gravitron wrote:Define abuse? If an administrator deems it inappropriate it's abuse.
Fair enough?

So you wish for a Dictatorship style running of these boards? Not sure about you, but I wouldn't feel comfortorable running a board like that, and I certinally wouldn't like to partake in a board being run like that. Currently we are, if we follow the political types, an Anarchism, and I think most of us agree that it works fine.

This is one of the few message boards I do frequent, for the exact reasons NeoThermic just stated. I don't have to worry about saying the 'wrong thing' and having my posts locked/deleted/account banninated because a Mod was in a bad mood and looking to lord 'Xtreem p0w3r' over someone.

If people in a community can regulate themselves in an orderly fashion, is 'law enforcement' really necessary?

P.S. This is the last time I'll feed the troll. Honest. :D

I would much rather exercise my olderness and slap you up.
Unfortunately, there's a slight issue of distance...
