A mate recently gifted me his old 4850, and I have to say, I'm massively impressed. (My nVidia 9800GT died a heat death a while ago!) I honestly don't need anything better, nor do I see that changing for a couple of years. Although the replacement card I had in the meantime was so bad that actual 3D graphics still feel like a luxury :P

I'm getting a second PC, not upgrading/replacing the other one.

That said, I already suspected that the major thing holding down my current card is probably my hard-drive, so one of the things I really want is a 7200rpm HDD. On top of that the only thing I really want better is more RAM (getting 8 instead of 4).

I might consider getting a second 4870, but I'm not averse at getting a better one for a bit more money.

It had me up until 4:30 in the morning, but the Super Bowl was worth it. A game where the last play, literally the last seconds decided the winner, and boy was it close. Giants definitely deserved the win more than the Patriots, so just about the perfect night.

So, NFL season over...but F1 and AFL start in a couple of weeks. Joy. :)

Was a good game, a bit slow in the middle but I was happy to see it finish like it did. I really didn't care for either team in it, so who win wasn't very important, I just liked that it ended on a high note.

I got myself a gtx 560 ti a couple of months ago. Depending on your budget / needs, I'd say it's one of the best mid/high end cards within a reasonable price range.

The ATI 6900 series is pretty damned good.

As for HDD speeds, if you go for a z68 motherboard then they come with technology that uses an SSD as a cache for a hard drive. From what I've read (I recently upgraded and went through this) the speeds are not that much slower than using an SSD if you use it for your OS hard drive. And it'll cost less than a whole SSD for the drive.

(On that note, have HDD prices come back down after the Taiwan disaster?)

But that works for the OS and commonly used programs - not for games. Most often used files get cached on the SSD, so it'll improve boot times and load times for things like browsers and other daily-use software, but not for games much. Which is why I went the SSD as main hard disk route. And am really very happy. I get Windows plus half a dozen games on the disk, and it's bloody fast.

Like pork rinds. I haven't had those in forever, probably nine years or so.

Sorry, without the "in space" part it's not actually a raise.

If the entire movie is like the trailer then it looks like it has been tailored for us misanthropes, I am very excited. . . .
