So, I have no illusions about my place of being an incredibly small fish in a very large ocean of politics. But, every now and then I can pull something off...
I'm managing an election campaign for a local candidate, and at a meeting a month or so back I said I was going to try and set up a meeting between the candidate and one of the most powerful political operatives in Arizona. The people at the table (all significantly older and more experienced, not to mention significant political forces in Phoenix) were nice enough not to laugh in my face about it, but after I left promptly told the candidate that I was out of my league, and that they could probably set something up by about May or so. They spent the next few days trying to convince him to drop me and hire one of them.
What they didn't know was that I wasn't blowing smoke when I said I knew the guy and would pull some strings. So not only did I get it setup months ahead of when they would have, at the meeting this morning the first thing the guy says after shaking my candidates hand is that it was my phone call that got him through the door. Meeting then went well, looks like he's going to back the campaign.
I may be a small fish, and I might make considerably less than the guys who tried to scoop me, but in this instance:
Suck on that, losers!
