So, a friend of mine is thinking of buying himself a new graphics card. He wants me to find him a good deal, though i have no idea what is a wise buy. Is there any good model out there with a reasonable price?

InstantAction is awesome. Free, but you have to have specific computer requirements. ZAP! is great. :)

Well, for the AU$170 you can get it for here, the 9800GT is a great deal... if he's looking for something more powerful, maybe a 4850?

I have a 9800 GT Which works well for me. Runs a little hot though.

^^

Isn't there a 4890 by now? (I know, I'm not exactly looking at the 'reasonale price' part :P)

Depends on the size of screen really.
22 inch, say 1650x1050, then a 4850 will do most games rather well, bar crysis.
If he is gaming at 1950x1600 or whatever it is, then a 4870 would be what I'd advise, or a 4890. Pixmania.com was doing a good deal on one for £169.

Right now the nvidia cards aren't really worth it. ATI has beaten them at this time.

Couldn't you just add that to the end of every graphics card description?

No, as anyone with a clue about graphics cards would tell you so. 4870 can run crysis. 4870x2, 4890. Nvidia 285. They all can play crysis at a decent framerate and resolution.

Well my ATI X1550 (basically a renamed x1300) is making me really, really sad that I have to drop everything on Zeno Clash to low for a playable framerate. I should probably stop splurging for new games and just save up for a decent graphics card (I hope I can save up before something good like Heavy Rain or Brutal Legend comes along).

Better than the FX 5200 (PCI!) that still powers my mom's computer.

The 7900GTX is still a perfectly fine card IHMO. Runs anything I throw at it. The 5200, now, that was a crap chip even when it was brand new. We still have two PCs here in the office with it. It barely manages to clear the screen at 60 FPS.

I wish to try out messing around with programming. I have no idea what languages are good, easy to learn etc. I have no idea what guides online could be wise to use. Any suggestions?
