Also, A shirt& jacket can look just as smart, yes more friendly and casual... So it's all about the placement

I second that notion. Plus, I always felt they were an excessive ornament, the only possible benefit being someone using it as a leash to bring you to bed...or you using someone else's as a lasso/lariat to bash their head against a wall . At least with, say, bowties, the ornamentation is a minimum.
