No, but you have to either have Visual Studio installed or the Visual Studio Redistributable DLLs installed.

This should work:
  1. Download and install the normal Windows demo
  2. Download and unzip the API in the same directory, overwriting the existing Defcon.exe
  3. Run Defcon.exe

Note that there is no playable bot just yet ( as of 21/11/08 ). The classic AI from Introversion will come soon, next week or so.

If I understand correctly, they're both saying the same thing, just different parts. :wink:

is there any guide as to how to use lua with this? I tried to show a coupla of my friends who are "occasional" programmers and they were put off by the complexity of C++, wheras lua obviously is somewhat simpler.

Direct LUA support is scheduled for later. If you're in a real hurry, you could wrap the C functions to LUA yourself, but I suggest you just wait.

yeah I'm learning C++ myself for the bots, so I think that may be a little beyond my abilities for now :P

Also, I'm really not in that much of a hurry to teach 4 people how to use lua, how to use the API, give them programming advice and advice on how to play defcon ;)

I think the AI that wins should be passed on to the military and given control over the all US nuclear missile silos. :D

This is a really cool idea, i'm going to give it a go, i've been doing programming for about a year, mostly in C#. However I would like an opportunity to give C++ programming a go.

We've seen loots of gaming competitions, but rarely a programming one like this. It's like building robots to fight each other!

Has anyong managed to be able to compile the code yet?

I haven't done much in C++ yet, I get errors like;

Error 3 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _WinMain@16 referenced in function ___tmainCRTStartup MSVCRT.lib mybot

I expect that getting in contact with Robin directly may be the best solution. Which code is this? Is this the Introversion bot or the simple bot?
