Multiwinia reviews are starting to come in thick and fast right now, and although we say it ourselves they're looking pretty fantastic! Take a look at these:

“This is more like Cannon Fodder deathmatch or real-time Worms, but much more exciting and more strangely touching.”
“Delightful and simple to understand”
“A one-size fits all casual crowd pleaser with a twist. We love it.”
Game Connect
8.5/10

“Multiwinia is a triumph. It has unique and inspiring graphics, fast, flawless gameplay, and more character than the last 10 games you played. It comes loaded with 49 unique maps, it recycles nothing, and every moment has been lovingly handcrafted by Introversion, which come yet again to the fore, proving that there is a future for 'bedroom programmers' that truly care about their craft. Go buy. Now.”
Stuffwelike.com

“If you’re a real-time strategy fan, you must play Multiwinia. With its simple yet satisfying gameplay, you’ll be playing for hours without any concern of reality. That’s why game addiction is so dangerous yet so fun.”
“Multiwinia is in a totally different league than even most professional AAA multi-million dollar video games. Buy it now.”
Gamewire

“For an indiegame this game is outstanding. Heck, even when they would be not indie developers, this would be outstanding. The game’s simplicity absolutely fits with the concept and makes it very easy to use for both casual and hardcore gamers. You will definitely not be disappointed by Multiwinia, this is absolutely worth your money (which is only €20). Introversion has once again done a great job showing graphics are not important, it’s about the gameplay.”

“Deceptively complex, it takes slightly longer than ‘a minute to learn’ but will definitely take a long time to master. We’ve talked about Multiwinia quite a bit, and there’s a reason for that: it’s a damn good game. Strategic, frenetic and fun, Multiwinia offers an experience that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else.”

There's even the pixel effect which makes things pixellated/lo-res even though this is not needed for the performance etc. These simplistic retro graphics are different from all the extremely reality-true graphics seen in games these days. Of course, they are also the reason Darwinia and Multiwinia are so loveable.
Exactly! Graphics are very important, a point which is often missed by developers who just default to attempting photorealism.

But still, you can just turn it off. I like it though, especially when you look up close on the models that have it.
That was not quite the point. Darwinia and Multiwinia are deceptively graphically intensive games. It doesn't look like it should be so, but it is. IV created a retro look, but it still requires a fair bit of computing horsepower. In fact, the pixel effect, which is (arguably) the most retro element of the look of the game, is also something that can bring older systems to their knees. Hence, the irony.
