For Defcon, using the retail CD key would unlock the Defcon Demo on steam and make it the full version. If you just renamed the game in the Steam Games list, it pretty much became Defcon.

There's no telling if IV will use a similar authentication system this time around though; so I guess that we'll have to wait and see.
