The first DEFCON reviews come in...

Its been an anxious wait here at IV but the first reviews are coming in and I must say what a fantastic bunch they are! I will be putting these up properly in due course on the exposure page but in the meantime thought it was only fair to share our successes! :)

WildIT Gaming Network (Australia) 9/10
http://www.gaming.wildit.net.au/?page=review&id=361
DEFCON is a term used by military to indicate combat status. DEFCON 5 is "everyone is out playing in the park", whilst DEFCON 1 is "everyone is throwing nuclear weapons at the park". A truly unique game that ensures each encounter is unique.

576Konzol.hu (Hungary) 9/10
http://www.576konzol.hu/hir_reszletes.php?id=141
"DEFCON walks along the same path as previous Introversion games did - it's unique, it's bizarre and it makes global thermonuclear war as entertaining and easy to pick up as a rollercoaster ride. You can easily get into the game, but you'll never master it: DEFCON is pure strategy, where you can easily fall from the top to the bottom of the apocalyptic world."

HC Gamer (Hungary) 90%
http://www.hcgamer.hu/gamer/index.php?p=5&c=13593
"Defcon is the perfect example that you don't have to fill up a DVD with data, spend millions of dollars, or have hundreds of people developing if you want to create something, that can be summarized with one word: cult.
People who like to let their brains work, who desperately seek the perfect "office-game" have met their reckoning. Small development team? Not even a 100 megs in size? For me, the game of the year so far. Congratulations Introversion, we're glad you've finally come."

Press Start Online (UK) 8/9
http://www.pressstartonline.co.uk/view.php?item=154
"Introversion have done it again, and rounded off a hat-trick of utterly unique, utterly brilliant games that continue to shine in the modern gaming landscape. It offers a hugely enticing premise, perfectly balanced and masterfully executed. No doubt we’ll be seeing another excellent hat-trick in the future, but until then lets raise a glass to the end of the world."

Out of 8 (US) 8/8
http://jaguarusf.blogspot.com/2006/09/d ... eview.html
"DEFCON has a wonderful theme that resonates through the game’s graphics and sound, simulating Cold-War era computing power complete with wire-frame continents and simple mock-ups of aircraft and weapons. The mood of the game is brilliant; there is a reason DEFCON includes a rolling demo, as the game is just plain fun to watch. Oh, and it’s under $20. DEFCON is ultimate pick-up-and-play multiplayer strategy game and I don’t know why you wasted your time reading this review instead of playing. Now go kill some innocent civilians!"

The Gaming Show did an overview on DEFCON and their first impressions after playing it for a couple of days. Check it out at http://gaming.thepodcastnetwork.com/200 ... isode-053/

Wonderful! Congratulations, IV. I would toast you with a glass of 25 year old single-malt, highland scotch, but they frown on that where I work :)

Had a bit of time to kill so I updated the list. If you post any I'll add it to the list.

** Last updated 11/10/06 **
Added Gamespot, 1UP, Gameguru Mania, Jolt Online Gaming UK, GamerDad and Heise Telepolis

Web reviews:

Gamespot (8.1/10)
It's the WarGames simulation you've been waiting 20 years for
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/defcon/review.html

1UP (9/10)
Like the greatest board games, its entry curve is small, its interface elementary, and its potential for strategic depth enormous. Oh, and despite barely grazing your 3D card, it's one of the best-looking PC games all year.
http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3154263

Gameguru Mania (85%)
DEFCON is proof that one doesn't require millions of dollars to make a great game in 2006. DEFCON is ultimate pick-up-and-play multiplayer strategy game and I don't know why you wasted your time reading this review instead of playing!
http://www.ggmania.com/full.php3?show=5813

Jolt Online Gaming UK (8.3/10)
By far one of the most understatedly atmospheric games of the year, DefCon has cornered the market on the kind of strategy that tenses the buttocks to sphincter-alarming proportions.
http://www.jolt.co.uk/index.php?articleid=7199

GamerDad (4/5)
The simple game mechanics are the hallmark of a good thinking game, allowing you to learn it in minutes, but making it take months to master.
http://www.gamerdad.com/detail.cfm?itemID=3376

Heise Telepolis - in german (no score given)
http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/23/23726/1.html

IGN (8.8/10)
DEFCON is fine testament to an independent developer willing to take a risk by creating games that tackle unsual ideas in thought-provoking, engaging and ultimately entertaining ways.
http://pc.ign.com/articles/732/732711p1.html

Internode (9/10)
Introversion continue to bring out new and innovative indie games and this is no exception.
http://games.internode.on.net/content.php?mode=reviews&id=50

Games Radar (9/10)
It's not a game to get lost in for hours on end, but it is one you'll get the urge to play again and again for months to come. The fact that it's only 15 bucks seals the deal. Buy it immediately.

Yahoo games (4/5)
Introversion has created a chilling, thoughtful, and eminently playable real time strategy game, squeezing more atmosphere into 60MBs than most games can manage with 600MBs. Sometimes, less is indeed so much more.
http://videogames.yahoo.com/gamereview?cid=1951444566&tab=reviews&page=0&eid=485546

Eurogamer (8/10)
Nuclear War has no winners. Except Introversion. And gamers.
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=68265

GamePro (4.5/5)
Global thermonuclear war has been a popular topic for decades, but few things have managed to capture the spirit of the subject and present in both a digestible and utterly unforgettable form as Defcon.
http://www.gamepro.com/computer/pc/games/reviews/83098.shtml

The A.V. Club (B+)
A simple, addictive game that'll make you cheer when the missiles launch, and give you nightmares when they land.
http://www.avclub.com/content/node/53569

The Mad Gamer (93%)
It's an experience unlike any other, and if all is fair in love and war, we love IV's war. Defcon will make you realise why Introversion make games they want to play: It's because we want to play their games too.
http://www.monkehs.com/viewtmg.php?t=4554

fragLANd LAN Gaming
This game is another triumph for game play over eye-candy, although there is no faulting IV's flair for 80's neon chic. At only £10, straight to the developer, its an absolute steal - almost like Fairtrade gaming.

Printed reviews:

PCGameplay (86%) - October 06 issue
http://www.pcgameplay.com/

games(TM) (90%) - November 06, p.126
Introversion’s best yet – chillingly brilliant.
http://gamestm.co.uk/

PC Gamer UK (87%) - November 06, p.96
Defcon is an equation that looks simple but can never quite be solved, and it always leaves you scratching your chin, your mind bristling with ideas for new atrocities to engineer.
http://www.futurenet.com/pcgamer/

Edge Magazine (70%) - November 06, p.90
The developer’s cleverest trick here, beyond creating a game that’s worth it for the presentation alone, has been to throw open so many of its rules to player customisation.

9/10 or more on all reviews. That's awesome.
IGN doesn't count.

IGN sucks.

They said Uplink is similar to Tron2.0.

From the betatesters, we all must rate it 9.999 out of 10. 0.001 was reserved for the fact that we've had more games of Defcon than hot dinners ;)

I thought the IGN review was really good, they said nothing bad about it, then gave it some strange scores at the end. But still, it was a good review. As for the rest, well done introversion, this game is gonna be huge! The question is....

How long will you remain underground?

I wish I could convince the editor of the page I'm moderator at to get me a review copy. There would be another Hungarian review by now. :(

I've been trying to contact him, to get permission to write a review at least after launch, but no reply yet. :(

The Gaming Show sent all their listeners off to defcon.com :s

Heheh, actually, they're far far from convincing reviewers "eer... what are they called? Oh! Introversion!"

I have asked if G@mers (on Rapture TV - Sky Channel 193) would be reviewing it - they said they'll talk to the producer and maybe do a feature on the independant gaming market :D
