Visual development diary of Darwinia

Postby Chris » Tue Mar 29, 2005 6:31 pm

We've added our development diary to the Extras section of this site. This diary shows the game through screenshots as it evolves over nearly 3 years of production. The early screenshots from the first tech demos are hysterical, what the hell were we thinking. To read the diary, click on Extras then click on Development. We hope you enjoy it.

Wow. Its quite intresting to see the original screenshots and core code of what is now Darwinia. The first three images do look rather good though, I hope that isn't forgoton for future projects :)

A great read, and watching darwinans fight eachother is as good today as it ever was ;)

I can't name a single other studio that's honest enough to admit it went through a blind panic great game it WAS worth it

Will there ever be a chance of getting any of these alphas? It would be fun!

Randomly generated maps could be made, the problem is the placement of units and buildings. These can be quite sensitive because if they're placed in a 'bad' position they can be unusable

Wow, this story, and the paintings and adverts and the PDF helpfile (which didn't make it in the final CD, as I've found), as well as a couple of screensavers, wallpapers, contributed mods and other goodies, is good enough for Darwinia's Bonus CD! ^_^

Looks like the makings of a voxel terrain engine. Might be good for a no-frill retro aircraft dogfight game if you ask me.

(dogfight.....*sigh!* brings back memories of Broderbund's Skychase, loved that game =)

Interesting read. :)

Not entirely sure why, but it reminded me of the start of Uplink's development (i.e. the scrapped 3D effort). :)

I'm glad you know how to change your mind on things Chris - How many studios would change a huge chunk of the game because it didn't seem to fit right? :D

It's ulny a hunch but i think that (and Time) was the reason why we dont have it.

hm.., a random terain maker would be nice. Just some basic options like "Flat-Mountain terain" or "Land-Water"... something like that.

Well, I'm no coder [offtopic]I dont eaven have informatic in School!! That woman that guided me when i had to chouse a shool told me that they had very good comps... Reith... K6, 32ram, no internet... Nearning how to type 200 leters p/s on a Old and broken keabord... If i knew HWO was she i would send my Darwinians to kill her >.<[/offtopic] so i dont know how much work has to be put in that, but some RTS's do have random maps, wich work out nice (Manualy made ones are bether still, but randoms give a freash feel to it)

Meaby when (if?) MultyPlayer comes along... (randoms for MP are much easyer :P)

Edit: sorry for the RPG thingy, typo ^^;;
