Updates from the land of Uplink
A few people have asked me if there will be any updates to Uplink after its main release. Of course there will! We have plans, ideas...who knows where this could go. Here is what we have already decided on.
There will be a Bonus CD. We've actually got some pretty cool shit to put on this, and they will be quite rare. We're not certain how these will be given out...maybe to people who have helped us in the past, or maybe to people who win competitions (highest Uplink score? Best agent profile?)
Patches. Ah yes. We have some ideas for a set of small patches to the game, which add new functionality and gameplay. I love what Lionhead are currently doing with Black&White - releasing a patch every week, with cool and interesting stuff in it. It keeps people interested, and it's good fun. Why not just include them in the game in the first place? This is called Feature Creep, and it is one of the big problems when developing a game. Towards the end you are just fixing bugs...you get bored, your mind wanders and you start dreaming up new and cool ideas for the game. Before you know it, another month has passed and still no game.
I've got some great ideas for game patches, each of which is a kind of "mini-project" on Uplink. A few people have requested the ability to "skin" Uplink - ie create new graphics, fonts and colour schemes to make the game look different. This is classic patch material.
Just have to finish the actual game first
