Display Problems in Linux (Mint 13 XFCE 64) -- FIXED

Postby Trashcan » Thu Sep 13, 2012 5:23 pm

Hello All,

I've been having problems starting up Defcon on my new Linux box. When I start the game (either from command line or menu) Defcon tries to resize my display to whatever the default should be. Unfortunately, my graphics card or monitor resent being forced to so low a resolution, and I simply get a “cannot display” message. I was unable to back out of the resulting black screen, and so was forced to restart my computer. After several attempts to get the game working, I got in touch with the very helpful people at Introversion (hello Mark!) and we worked out how to get me started.
Essentially, the game creates a pref file in home/.defcon after a successful start. If a successful start isn't possible, then you need merely to create the folder and file and then you're off to the races.

I was sent a preferences.txt file which read:

ScreenWidth = 1920
ScreenHeight = 1200
ScreenWindowed = 0
ScreenColourDepth = 32
ScreenRefresh = 60
ScreenZDepth = 24

SoundLibrary = software
SoundMixFreq = 44100
SoundMasterVolume = 255
SoundChannels = 32
SoundMusicChannels = 8
SoundHW3D = 0
SoundSwapStereo = 0
SoundMemoryUsage = 1
SoundBufferSize = 512
SoundDSP = 0

RenderSmoothLines = 1
RenderBorders = 1
RenderCityNames = 1
RenderCountryNames = 0
RenderWater = 2
RenderRadiation = 0
RenderLowDetailWorld = 0
RenderObjectTrails = 1
RenderLobbyEffects = 1

NetworkMetaServerPort = 5009
NetworkServerPort = 5010
NetworkClientPort = 5011
NetworkUsePortForwarding = 0
NetworkTrackSynchronisation = 0

InterfaceTooltips = 1
InterfacePopupScale = 7.00
InterfaceSideScrolling = 1
InterfaceCameraDragging = 1
InterfacePanicKey = 1
InterfaceStyle = default.txt
InterfaceZoomSpeed = 1.00
InterfaceTextLanguage = english

PlayerName = Urkle
ServerName1 = New Game Server
ServerName2 =
ServerName3 =
ServerName4 =
ServerName5 =
TutorialCompleted = 7
RenderNodes = 0
AmbxEnabled = 0

WindowUnitCreation = 0.100.100.400
WindowScores = 1750.0.170.238
WindowToolbar = 533.1134.637.65
WindowWorldStatus = 331.0.420.25
ScreenAntiAliasing = 1
WindowWhiteBoardPanel = 1335.424.65.202
InterfaceKeyboard = -1

Paste that all of ther above into a text and save it as preferences.txt ; enable show hidden files; create .defcon (folder) ; paste the text file into the folder, and then start Defcon normally. In my case, it struggled for a few seconds, and then displayed. I immediately changed the display prefs to run in windowed mode, and then quit and restarted.

It worked just fine and sorted out my problems completely. Hopefully, the instructions will help anyone else who runs across the same problem.

Regards,

Stu
