How do I install it on my Eee PC?

Postby Awooga Guy » Sun Apr 13, 2008 12:03 am

Hi all,

I recently purchase an Asus Eee PC (great little thing) and I was hoping to get Defcon installed on it. However I know zero about Linux. Can I get Defcon installed on my Eee, if so how? Will my registration key from my Windows copy also work on it?

Cheers me dears :)

Well, I have no experience with the EeePC myself, but I've heard stories that DEFCON runs on it fine, so here's the basic procedure:

1. Get the tarball from http://download.introversion.co.uk/defc ... .42.tar.gz onto the EeePC
2. Extract the tarball
3. Run the DEFCON executable in the folder you extracted to

It's that easy :) And as to the authkey, yes, the Windows key works fine on the linux version :)

I'm not sure on the graphics chip in the EeePC if it can handle some hardware rendering you should be able to get it to run... Screen resolution may become a problem also.

Nay, 800x480 is plenty, I've played DEFCON at 640x480, and sure, it wasn't ideal, but it's certainly playable. And as to the performance, apparently it runs fine - http://forums.introversion.co.uk/defcon ... 1922#71922

I didn't say it wouldn't be enough, more that it is a very odd resolution to code for (opengl usually handles it, not game dev though).

What do you mean by "game dev"? The developers? Any engine worth its salt nowadays can run in any resolution and queries the graphics drivers for all supported resolutions.

Yes, but some only support VESA and widescreen resolutions... This is getting rarer as more and more is offloaded to the graphics card, but opengl has never had to much of a problem rendering unusual scaling.

Excellent, thanks for that folks :) Got it up and running. Wow, what a difference turning off smoothed lines makes!

See you on there :)

Heh, I can't count how many ladder games I've played at that resolution. I can even remember once playing orgazmo zoomed completely out the whole time just so I could record and post it.

800x480 is not 4:3 resolution, or a widescreen resolution...

Well, it's not 16:9 or 16:10 if that's what you mean... sure, 5:3 is a weird ratio, but when you use OpenGL the way IV do, the only thing hindering screen resolutions is the graphic drivers, and even then nothing specific is required - I've played DEFCON at 1680x600 for the hell of it once. :P

Here's a secret: Aquaria doesn't even support widescreen mode. Not even 5:4 resolutions such as 1280x1024. Well, you can use them, but they don't adjust the aspect ratio! (It'll all be fixed in the next patch though, Alec promises :P)

It's a bit worse than that, actually :) In addition to the aspect ratio changes, the screenfilling "it's getting dark" quad will only be rendered as a 1280x960 quad, causing ugliness. Thankfully, good graphics drivers allow custom resolutions.

Yeah, that annoyed me with the Aquaria demo... didn't phase me hugely though, as I never got into it much. Pretty, but not my kind of thing.

We have been informed that a whole slew of new Aquaria features are being incorporated into the Mac version of Aquaria, including proper widescreen support. I assume that you Windows folk will be getting those features about the same time the Mac version comes out. We should be starting beta testing any day now (the beta testers have been selected), and I anticipate that the beta process will be pretty quick, as we are really only testing the port and the new features. More than that, I can't really say.
