Thanks for all the replies. NeoThermic had the solution: make a file "~/.defcon/preferences.txt" and add the line "ScreenWindowed 1". The problem was because defcon crashed out so early in the startup, it never got a chance to create that file. So I had to manually create it.

As to the rationale, I want to allow people to play defcon without having to worry about installing anything or messing up their system. By putting it in a virtual machine the game is isolated and can't affect the host machine. Also I want to be able to put it on a USB drive and use it from anywhere without installing using moka5 LivePC. I was going to upload it as a LivePC and make it so people can try the game without installing anything.[/url]

That's just a marvelous idea. Not only can people try it and enjoy it, you can also have the end of the world in your pocket.
