Testing the waters

Postby Feud » Mon May 10, 2010 9:12 am

So, having not played a serious game of Defcon is ages (played a game against a friend who was on a demo, going easy to show him the ropes, other than that I can't remember my last game), I figured that an old geezer like me ought to play a game and see how the youngin's do things nowadays.

I hung out in one of the dedicated servers till a local ruffian showed up, and fisticuffs soon commenced (random territories, Genocide scoring). I was SA, he was Europe.

The naval war went very well. I deployed three six ship fleets along my North East coast, with three single bbs further out for recon, and a squad of three carriers running sub protection in the narrows. I launched my bombers quick, and had just gotten them in the air when his fleet plowed headlong into my bb screen. I swung my planes north east, and a massive battle ensued. His fleet was quickly decimated, my own forces losing mostly planes in the process (but no carriers or subs), and my anti sub efforts caught most of his subs. Based on later fleet encounters, I estimate I sunk approximately 8-9 bbs, 8-10 carriers, and 10-11 subs, to my six bb losses.

At that point the war was basically won. A later encounter with the remainder of his fleet back by round based bombers resulted in several more losses, but it was the desperate charge of a wounded and cornered foe and once beaten his forces we completely broken.

He did however do fairly well with his ICBM attack, Central America was devastated and my being out of practice resulted in a poor silo location. As a result, losses were fairly high.

However, the counter attack was swift and brutal. Using carrier based bombers to aid in the confusion by firing decoy missiles (entering radar range just before those targeting silos, giving my attack a few extra seconds) his silos were wiped out, and Europe was quickly rendered to a desolate waste not dissimilar to Arizona. The last bombs fell on London and Paris, London because it was close, and Paris because it was France.

The old geezer even used the Feud-silo-setup! I haven't seen that for ages. :P
Nor have I read such a clear and brief and amusing debriefing for ages. Thx.
Since dedcon recs are around debriefings are rare. BTW: Is there a rec? :D
I would like to see the master of using 6-ship-fleets in action, again.

I hope I will meet you while testing the beta patch.

Not sure, it was a dedicated server who's name had something to do with "dating", I think.

You couldn't possibly post your Defcon map style? It's very attractive.

That looks like simple_grey. Are you using simple_grey, Feud? If so, download here: http://yozh.org/files/simple_grey.txt (right-click and download, or copy-paste after it loads).
