Excellent example for Rimmertalk

Postby Schubdüse » Fri Jan 15, 2010 12:39 am

Mrmot (New Player, SA) and me (Popcleaner, EU) had a funny match, in which "Rimmertalk™" was quite distracting.
Mrmot was pretending to be a noob:"I'm playing this game just for 2 days."
I saw that he was placing a panzer formation and asked him about that.
He replied:" What is a panzer?"
All the time I was thinking:"Goddamnit, if this is a newbie, then we have a new "star". I was wondering and wondering...
Unfortunately, he revealed himself as Mrmot.
Somehow, Rimmertalk™ is still working on my mind...

It's when someone is blowing so much smoke up your ass that it feels like you're getting a rimjob.

You can use the chat box as a "mind weapon".
For example, right before def3 starts, you can try to distract your opponent by typing something into the chat box.
Bug for speed, make a joke, insult him, ask him a question, whatever...
Maybe he will answer and in doing that he has lost some seconds. Your fighters and/or bombers are earlier in the air.
Or just keep him talking right from the beginning, resulting in a not so ideal placement.
Of course that will not work anymore for advanced players.

When you are in the position, that your opponent needs to play (BOR) in order to win, you can bug him all time.
"I have to leave soon." "I need to go to bed." Whatever...
It happend to me that I wasn't really playing a good (BOR)-style because of that bugging. Best solution: /ignore

Often, Ace Rimmer is dropping tactical information in the public chat, pretending to have forgotten to switch to ally chat.
Now you are in a double bind. Is he telling the truth? Is it really a chat mistake (this still can happen)? Is he bluffing?
You start to think about that, which might inhibit to focus properly.

I have to be honest..Mot didn't use Rimmertalk™ purely cause he properly didn't use a Panzer™. I know why you did this wrong adfirmation...cause you don't know the real meaning of Nirvanastyle™.
Mot placed a bad form of Nirvanastyle™ navy, being all the 12 battleships in two group of six..We could say a mix with Nirvanastyle™ and Panzer™.
I think I understood his mind aptitude in that match: Mot doesn't consider the value of Nirvanastyle™ and (at this time) he can use it just in a joking way. I think he wanted to beat you with a shitty placement, using subs as usually he never did. That was not a match but a joke cause he played also like a noob..and Rimmertalk™ was a part of it.

Sure, we could argue about the definition for Rimmertalk™.
But my defintion is simple: Every communication of your opponent in the chatbox, which is able to distract you is Rimmertalk™.
Even spamming the chat box with nonsense could be considered as Rimmertalk™. But not in my opinion, because in this case there is no talk.

I used to do this all the time to and with Ace (stopped doing it to him once I realized he knew me too well for it to work), if I didn't recognize the names of the opponents I'd go on about how I was out of practice, apologizing for what probably wasn't going to be a good game for them, trying to get them to relax a bit. It worked very well (and hopefully gave Ace a few chuckles since he knew it was a load of BS).

Ah, the good old days and how I miss them. :D

I do have a habit of not paying attention to which channel I'm on when discussing plans, so it's not uncommon for me to put real information in public. However, I learned a long time ago that if I do it on purpose, it can be useful (as Schub has pointed out). In fact, even when I do it on purpose, most of the time I'm being honest. I find it's helpful to give then enemy a heads up and then still try the same plan, makes you focus. :P

In my opinion its best not to focus on the chat at all.
Those mindgames arent that uncommon but why bother.
Judge your enemy by his/her actions and dont take anything for granted.
